Forums - PC - PC sound problem PLEASE HELP!

Hi there,

I have a Dell PC (I know) with Dell speakers (I know) and for reasons I won't bore you with we unplugged then replugged everything attached to it.

Now the sound doesn't work.  The computer reckons the speakers are there, it lists Realtek High Definition Audio in the Devices Manager, the sound is up and the lights on the speakers are on.  In sound playback it says the Speakers are "2 - Realtek High Defintion Audio" and the only thing I can think of is maybe that used to read "1 - High Defintion Audio."  But I could be wrong, it may just mean there are two speakers.

I cannot find help relevant to me elsewhere.  Please help.

if you unplug speakers sometimes your computer will try and revert to other forms of speakers and you'll have to manually set the new speakers to be used again. try going into control panel -> sound, and set default to speakers instead of realtek digital output

there should be a little green mark next to speakers instead of realtek after you set it to default (the set to default button is right above the ok and cancel button)

Go to your refgular old windows sound manager and make sure that the speakers are the default sound, make sure the device is actually enabled. Go into the properties and you should see information about the jacks, and make sure it looks ok-ish.

Maybe try and reinstall real teck HD if all else fails.

I hate realtek. it drives me insane. I run headphones or speakers though my LCD screen and it screws up so many times and doesn't register the HDMI output sound, arrhrh

Thanks guys.  I will try all these things and get back to you.

I am using Vista.  It says Speakers and next to them says Realtek (as in they are combined together and are the only option).  The "Set Default" button is whited out and unavailable.  Thoughts?

Maybe you put it back into a different port? I have about six differently coloured ports for sound and only one of them works but I couldn't say why.

Thanks guys it is working now.  I tried all the ports over and over.  What did it was fiddling around in the Sound manager settings.  Not sure what did it but somethign worked :)
