Wait, what? MGS4 looked bland in comparison to Gears of War 2? Even when it's sub-HD (which, mind you, I'm already aware of), it looked quite better than Gears of War 2 in my eyes. The ONLY places where I see a legitamite complaint about MGS4's graphics is some shadows and the textures of the South America level. But otherwise, MGS4 was the game that wowed me the most by console graphics standards in 2008.

Granted resolution isn't the only factor to judge a games technical merits by but I just couldn't help but notice how bland and flat the environment textures looked. I think most of the effort went into the character models because they do look stunning. Also Gears 2 was a smoother experience. MGS4 had an uncapped framerate which could be quite jarring. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yeah Gears 2 was a great improvement but when Gears 1 first released it was the best graphics on consoles. When Gears 2 released it wasn't near the best graphics on consoles. In games like Uncharted 2 or MGS4 or others there are times when you could swear this was real life; as if the characters are actually living and breathing. MGS4 isn't as consistant with its graphics but in act 4 there are moments where the game just looks better than anyhting out there.

Bit in bold. Gears 2 was released in 2008. Which game on console had better graphics in 2008? You claim it wasn't anywhere near, I think it was one the best graphics for console by 2008. IMO the only game that looked better then either Gears by 2008 was Uncharted 1. No point mentioning Uncharted 2, that was released a year after Gears 2. You say MGS4 but I have to disagree. MGS4 only had detailed characters but everything else was pretty bland. Heck it's even sub-hd. Even Hideo Kojima was dissapointed by them (he was still getting used to the PS3 architecture).

So back to the original question...which games were better looking than Gears 2 by Nov 2008?

Its true though. i played the game thos year and i noticed that the game only looks really detailed when you have cutscenes . This whree you see high detailed chracter models. The rest of teh game especially the environment was indeed plain. You could spot alot of low res textures and jaggies. Thats waht i noticed at the beginning of the game where you  are in the middle east. There weren't ugly just not the *OMG I JUST JIZZED MY PANTS* quality. For me at that time gears 2 was better because in game and cutscenes wre consistent . There wasn't huge differences between the two like it was in mgs4

Best music you could have in a trailer like this... Maybe Gears 3 won't be as much about Marcus and Dom talking about their feelings for each other and will actually kick ass.

Haha, yeah. I NEVER played GoW for the story.

Feelings for each other...don't you mean Baird and Cole....and especially Baird =p.

That's very true. MGS4 does seem very flat at times, the framerate is jarry and there are a lot of low res textures. But there are times in the game where everything is perfect, the lighting, the textures and the framerate, it's in these moments that I think MGS4 is one of if not THE best looking game this generation.

And you are right, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I think MGS4 looks better than Gears of War 2 AND Uncharted 2, I think Killzone 2 looks better than Killzone 3, I think Crysis 2's graphics are mediocre and I think Final Fantasy XIII is one of the best looking games this generation. There are too many factors that make a game look great, including art design and personal preference.

During in-game cutscenes, it's actually quite consistent with the quality of gameplay, though I will agree it's not as consistent as Gears 2. The only case where I was underwhelmed by MGS4 was, like I said, the South America level as well as some jaggy shadows. I could go on to explain in detail my issues with Gears 2's graphics and where I think MGS4 shines, but it's as Badassbab said: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Personally, I just see better graphics in MGS4 overall, and it feels, for the most part, clean (unlike GT5, especially when it first released).

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Gonna be a hell of a fight between the graphics of Uncharted 3 and Gears of War 3 :D!

I for one am very excited.

(Knockout victory :O?)

I agree as well. The thing with the comparison against Gears 2 and MGS4 is that Gears has more color but doesn't look realistic at all. MGS4 has blander textures and less color but looks alot more realistic. That's why I love Uncharted 2's graphics because they are so realistic but do a much better job with the color palette than MGS4 did.

Just imagine...Uncharted 3 built from the ground up on PC. Does anyone know what that would do for the sales of high-end graphics cards?

Graphics = Underwhelming, seriously falling behind from what used to be such a graphical powerhouse of GoW1. And this is with an extra 6 months in polishing.

Gameplay on the otherhand is already a 10/10 just due to the fact that it'll be slightly more paced than Gears 2.

This is just the beta and the retail campaign in full will look lot better.
