LOL at people saying 256meg is too low, have you heard of this thing called the PS3, it has 256meg of ram and it plays games in much higher resolutions. 

Remember they said that it was going to be on par with the PS3, so if anything a slightly lower specs than the PS3 is to be expected as it doesnt have to work as hard having a much smaller screen. 

As long as it has ingame XMB (or whatever new OS is), and full PSN support it will do fine. I honestly think trophy support alone will make it sell.

Why not just release 2 versions?

Isn't the NGP going to use a SoC, with embedded RAM? If this is true, then you don't have RAM plus VRAM, you have a pool of fast access memory, and you use it to store all the data. All the smart phones have this architecture,as it's much more efficient.

Would cost more. You would have to have separate production lines, you would probably lose some bulk buying discount, and i don't think you would be able to charge that much more for a souped up versio; developers will make sure their games play well on the lower version.

I just don't get how RAM can be such a price factor... How different are their RAM chips from PCs? cause it's damn cheap on PC....

But what if Nintendo cuts the price of the 3DS to £150 ($247)?

Why are some people here saying the PS3 only has 256 MB of RAM? It's got 512 MB of RAM.

And either way, the NGP isn't as strong as the PS3, and it can't work with as many polygons and high resolution textures as the PS3 can, so having 384 MB of RAM should be sufficient for it. More is always better from a technical standpoint of course, but with the law of dimishing returns in effect, it's probably not worth the effort, not to mention the added price and power consumption.

Smart move on Sony's part (if true, of course).

Then again, I see little use in it, tbh, because we already know Nintendo is asking a lot more money for the 3DS than they could have, making a ton of profit off the thing. So IF Sony price NGP competitively, you can be sure Nintendo will lower 3DS' price to say $199 or less. They could do that and still make a crapload of profit.
