Forums - Sony - PS3 "the confessions of a blue-ray player"

I use my PS3 80% of the time as a games console, and 20% for BD / DVD. I have no interest in going back to DVD as more BDs / HD-DVDs become available (I also have an HD DVD player). From the people I know that own a PS3

-One of my friends uses it as a BD player primarily, with some gaming on the side
-Three of my friends use it as a games console only (have SDTV)
-Someone I met yesterdays uses it for both

A couple people I know that are getting a PS3 soon will be using it as a games console primarily. BTW, this is all from the US.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I don't need HD formats, but I want it... Same goes for many others I know, a few have quite a collection already.

Speaking of all this, there have been heavy rumors that Warner Bros. will go exclusive to Blu-Ray in the next few weeks (probably at CES) in attempt to establish a single dominate format, since the 4th quarter data is now in, and it has been shown that Toshiba's massive price cuts have had little to no effect on the status quo.

Do you think there would be a spike in ps3 sales after such an announcement from fence sitters jumping in and HD DVD owners going neutral?

Honestly, no. First, it will take months, maybe years, after a WB exclusivity announcement for Toshiba to give up the HD-DVD ghost, and I imagine many HDDVD fanboys will be resentful enough that they will hold out as long as possible (for the record, I'm neutral on the issue, though I do think it clear BR is going to win out in the end). Those that do decide to jump in currently have cheaper options than the PS3, with at least 3 players now selling for under $300. Moreover, the videophiles are probably going to want to get a dedicated BR player, no matter how good the PS3 may be. Those who chose to get a PS3 for this reason are going to be few.

With PSN games I own around 22 games and about 7 blu-ray movies.

I don't know a single person that owns a PS3 just for blu-ray. In fact the only person I know that even owns a blu-ray besides myself is my dad and frankly thats because it came with the system. Personally I own 10 blu-rays and 13 PS3 games at the moment.

I didn't get the PS3 for blu-ray, I got it for the games.

However, I would really love to watch some blu-ray movies since we do have a 1080p TV, but we don't really care that much when it comes to movies. We own a few movies, but we'd mainly go to a local rental store if we really wanted to see a movie. Hell, I rarely even go to movie theaters ($10 my ass and that's just for the ticket, I'd rather rent a movie for two or three bucks). Now if the local rental store we go to began to stock blu-ray's, I'd be all over that.

something to note: the argument that people are waiting for one format to win the bluray/hddvd battle only applies to those interested in purely watching movies.

This is because blu-ray actually is and always will have an advantage over dvd for GAMING. which is still the primary reason it was included in the PS3 IMO.

PS1: CDROM, PS2: DVD, PS3: Blu-Ray ----> all for gaming primarily because of the different storage capacities that accompany each new generation of gaming.

If Blu-Ray were to fail, Sony would still produce them at a loss, similar to the UMD market for the PSP.
Games will always be on Blu-Ray for the PS3.
Blu-Ray will always exist in some form.

@OP To me the PS3 is of course a gaming machine first. But anytime I watch a DVD or BluRay, it is on the PS3, and that is quite often.

For Christmas I just got the Die Hard collection on Blu-Ray (all 4 movies). As well as the Mission Impossible trilogy and blazing saddles all on bluRay as well.

I know a lot of people and only one wants PS3 right now funny enough this firl just bought her first flatscreen TV(720p). She wants a PS3 for Blu Ray, I would have advised her about the format war and how I feel she should get a good upscaling DVD player (I know the PS3 is amazing at that but you can get great ones for <$200) instead. I would advise against getting a Blu Ray Player but here BF(my roomate) wants to play a PS3, so I dont want to take that from him.

Everyone I know that wants a game system wants a DS, Wii or a XBOX and no one really cares about HD formats. I have heard Blu Ray used in public a couple of times so I think the name is getting out there. This is just my experience but I have seen anyone want a PS3 other than that one person.

I found a place that has a 60 gig and am tempted to buy though I dont want a PS3 at the moment.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
