Forums - Website Topics - gamrFeed - what do you like, what can we do better?

  • News posts are a bit bland. I feel the structure is usually something like: 1) serious stuff, 2) possibly writer's own opinion. It feels like a usual forum news post with the content copied (serious stuff) and then the posters own thoughts at the end. I think if the writer has a need to express his/her own opinion, it should blend in the text better instead of being a line or two at the end. Of course the line between facts and opinion should still be clear.
  • Most 'top' lists are pretty boring. The most recent example would be 'Top Ten Unnecessary PlayStation Move Accessories'. I certainly don't mind them as there's not too many of them, just thought you should know.
  • Some editorials/features/whatever are very amateurish and/or have a biased feel to them. I couldn't find any recent examples so I suppose it's not a big problem overall.
  • I haven't been reading too much gamrFeed stuff lately but often when I do, I see either typos or, more commonly, incorrect grammar, for example writing 'your' instead of "you're". I suppose this isn't too common either... But I read a lot less news posts and such here than I do elsewhere yet this is the site where I see such errors the most. Such errors grab my attention pretty quickly and make you look like amateurs. It's a small thing to fix, I think fixing it would be worth it.

- Ability to report comments. Sometimes people are dicks in GamrFeed as well.

- Much better editing. While in general the contents alright occasionally something stupid gets through, I've seen ones when the title has been edited after publishing because it was blatant sensationalism or where a news article is written in a completely biased tone or where a rumour was posted as a fact. These should never have been posted.

- Concentrate more on original pieces, not necessarily the deep analytical kind but just good old fashioned opinion pieces. Find people with senses of humour and get them to write interesting and amusing stuff about the gaming industry.

- being able to relpy to a post over there

- have a "like" button (maybe a +1 or something)

- A longer page with more posts (maybe even loading as you scroll down?)

~~~ An easier way to know which articles are new - - - - - Maybe a *new* tag, where you'd click *remove new* to remove the *new* tag from all current articles (have a timestamp for it maybe)
For the most part, I think the writers/reporters for GamrFeed do a fantastic job. But since this is a thread about what we think is wrong....
As has been said a few times already, the flame-bait/antagonistic style of journalism for some of the GamrFeed entries are a bit childish and amatuerish. That seems to be the trend in journalism in general, not saying that VGC is the only one guilty of this.
This is related to my first point, but the "Fox News Is Stupid" and  "Senator XXX Says Games Are the Devil"-type entries are annoying and take away from the site's credibility. You know as soon as you see the headline you're going to be reading some good ol' righteous indignation railing against the powers-that-be. These kind of stories can be reported, and even opinionated on, without making the reader feel like they are reading a political/activist news blog.
The blog-style "journalism" is something I've never been a fan of in general. A blog is a blog, and news article is a news article.
All of these things I have mentioned are also things that IGN is guilty of(except I have not noticed an agenda against Fox News, or denigrating anyone who says anything bad about games). IGN has followed this trend toward amatuer/modern style journalism and a lack of focus on real news. I maybe spend 1/10th the time I used to on IGN. I used to go there and read all of the lastest news for the day, reviews, previews, and the occasional opinion piece. Now, you typically have to swim though a lot of mess like "Top 10 Mustache Styles We Want In The Next Wario Game" or "The Dirty Secrets That Game Publishers Don't Want You To Know". It's either silly fluff or sensationalist headliners and articles used to get cheap hits for the site.
I'm not saying VGC is as bad as IGN, but I've noticed this kind of stuff starting to creep into the site. I dont even know if it's just 1 writer that does all of thse pieces, or if it's something a few of the crew does. I think overall our GamrFeed peeps do a really good job, and I use VGC as my main spot for news now. Keep up the good work everyone.
another point that I personally have and seen with others, is the nessesarity of so many subsites?
the vgc part and the gamerfeed could be combined
gamrreview could be put on the subpage of the game itself? or with a new review in gamerfeed, same applies for gmrtv
I am curious why you done it this way, cuz imo it looks like a lot of unnessesary space and pages 2 move around on, or is it a way 2 increase hits? yes yes i know your site you you cna do whatever you like, but im interested in the motivation? did it bring more people? is the growth/expansion as big as it was 2 years ago?
with friendly regards,
Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.
Main thing:
Stop making articles with the same subject seperate following every update on a situation . All those articles two weeks ago plastering the hub saying "PS3 HACKED!", "CREDIT CARD DATA LEAKED!", "PSN ONLINE IN X TIME SAYS SONY!" could have been condensed into one with seperate sections, rather than a stream. It looked like the site was imitating Kotaku with spamming misleading, dire headlines that really aren't major to attract "readers" (mostly trolls...). For example, as of right now, the incorrect article stating the PS3 Firmware is at fault for LA Noire's overheating is still up while the real article is just above it. Unless Gamrfeed can't for a reason, they should have edited the orginal article to the current information rather than post another seperate article and update the original.
Quality control. There are lots of crap articles in the news section. It got especially bad during the George Hotz scandal. Seriously, there would have been an article if someone from Anonymous had farted. I feel like there's more of an attempt to be sensationalist and write attention-grabbing titles rather than produce quality articles. There's still plenty of good stuff, but I feel like the credibility of the news section has declined.
defo need to cut out all the crap that's posted, some serious quality control is needed.
focus more on the original articles, like the top 10's; they're entertaining and are of a good standard
"Sales can be a tricky thing. They are not necessarily the best indicator of content quality (see: The Pirates of the Caribbean and The Transformers movie franchises) "
Thats some of the stuff I think the article could do with out. There are already two comments for that article just about Pirates of The Caribean. The article could of done with out that digg at two popular franchises and would of come off much better to me.
