I would presume its a small number. Because it sounds like MS willing to take a hit for this update.

I'd presume the original 360's would be more affected than the newer Slim ones, I wonder how many there are too be replaced though, with RRoD, I doubt there would be too many 2005 models around anymore

I don't see how this relates to RROD at all.
RROD wasn't planned. To the contrary, MS is going into this update with the anticipation of some consoles not working properly. In this case they have to be prepared to cover people beforehand.

I wonder how that works when you have an extended warrenty for all issues with the store you bought it at. I had to buy a new extended warrenty after my 360 was replaced for RROD.
It's probably only really old consoles that have the problem, my 3 year warrenty is up anyway.
Generous offer, and the best approach. With RROD history and current PSN woes the last thing MS needs is similar bad press to Sony. Clearly this is something unfixable unless they back off the new format so the only sensible option is to replace the older consoles and get them off the market. The 12 months Gold is the suger on the pill.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I would say its realted because they learned from the RROD experience that they need to better test out their equiptment to find its flaws and than to make things right for the end user through just compensation. Gives me hope the next xbox will not have those issues.

And here I was complaining whole the time my X360 had an reading disc problem (open tray) sadly bought a slim a month ago.
