why would anyone choose a life full of discrimination? :)

Because they're masochists?

If they loved being self-defeating why would they seek immigration to more tolerant countries ? fight for their rights?

EDIT: have you two actually met gay men?

have you actually met masochists?

that doesn't answer my questions but to answer yours. I did, so?

and I met gay men with sadistic personality disorder...

well your question didnt make much sense.  you originally asked why someone might choose to be discriminated against.  you then make assumptions of our answer and ask a question based on that.

wat.

"Because they're masochists"

"god damn you to heck akvod!"

wat.

what i said was clearly an edit because i said the almost the exact same thing as akvod and his posted before mine. you seemed to understand that when you said "you two" ...?

people might like to be discriminated against because they are masochists.  your proceeding question about immigration makes assumptions about these masochists that arent even suggested.

Society and upbringing play no part in it whatsoever. Because if that were true, how come homosexuality has been around for as long as mankind has, across the entire globe and each and every culture, and how come it exists among animals as well? Did their society make them so? xD

Your missing the point. Yes it has existed probably since people began. It is not that society "makes" someone gay directly. It strongly influences how we see the world. If a society does not care or structures its' views on homosexuality differently you get different results. Some cultures have - and a few still do  - actually enourage some forms of same sex relationships for various reasons. In those culture sex is defined differently.  That definition shapes how the people in that society interact, and how they behave.

Society does not "make" one gay, it defines one as gay. The set of sterotypes, and expectations for homosexuals that we believe in are purely a fancy of culture. Our views on what is the right type of sex and shen it should happen is also made by culture. A person's attractions is independant of society, but society shapes how that person acts and interacts with society.

and the fact that animals practice same sex coupling does not disprove or prove the causes of society or genetics on sexual preference.  Many animals do not have as complex thought processes as we do. Asssuming that our ability to think does not possibly differentiante us from them is a fallacy. Also, some of our relatively close cousins the Bonobos are - in western soceity's view- kinky little freaks. Sex is a basic part of social interactionfor them, and it is as common as a handshake . They have very complex rules for how sex happens, and they practice sex in all forms. They are matriarchal and it is very common for sex to happen as part of the ruling process.

people have a tendancy to assume that whatever definition they are used to is a real thing. Most definitions, if not nearly all, are constructed. The traits that a "normal" man or woman should have are defined by society.

Try to define "funny", "good", "bad", :"justice", "comfort" and you will find that each person has a slightly different take on things. Our society filters and directs us to have mostly similar views, but when you start interacting with even more people from more society's you will start to get even more view points. Definitions are cultural, and that culture has implications. There are not many things you can possibly define in stark terms, because there are no universal and permamanent definitions.

It's a choice and here is why. We choose who we love. There have been numerous studies on the subject, and all of them have pointed to the fact that we, as human's, choose our mate. Infact, animals do the very same thing, they choose a mate based on physical traits, which one can give them the strongest, healthies offspring to preserve their breed. There have, however, been no conclusive studies on whether being gay is genetic or not.

Anyway, if you truely believe being gay has to do with genetics, than you are basically saying being gay is a defect. Follow my logic here if, you can see through the anger you obtained while reading this post. People who have mental disorders are genetically "defective". People who have other physical oddities are genetically "defective". Now, let me clarify even further, the terms I am using, "genetically defective" and "oddities", are simply a way to convey the fact that their genetic makup is differant that the average human being. If being gay is indeed, genetic, then it is a genetic oddity. The reason for this is because it does not follow the basic human/animal genetic coding that seeks to procreate in order to preserve one's species.

In closing, let me make clear that, since I do believe being gay is a choice, no matter if I believe it is the right choice or not, it is still a choice, and I respect that people are willing to make it. Also, before anybody askes me "when did you choose to be attracted to the oposite sex" I reply that it was probably around the same age most people do, and right around the same age gay people choose to be attracted to the same sex. Lastly, Don't pass me off as homophobic, and a hater of gay people.  4 out of 7 girlfriends I had we bi-sexual, and I have a friend who's brother is gay. I have also known a boy who's parents were both women, and I have been aquanted with a gay woman. Also, I think it is horrible the way Gay people are treated, It's a choice, not a crime.

the concept of defect is socially constructed. It could  be based in whole or in part on genetics. Whether we view it as good or bad is in how we define it, not in the gentic code itself. Most peole wouldn't consider hair or eye color to be overly important in terms of evaluating a person's worth in our society. In 1940's germany there was a different defintion of what genetic traits were good and bad.

Gay/les being masochists is the massive assumption here. It's funny.

I'm on the fence about people being born gay but I I'm 100% positive that it's not a choice at all.

Btw, are there any gay people on here who think it's a choice? I'm assuming all the people who say it is probably aren't.

its largely environmental, so its a choice.

no one is born Gay.

but no one should hate gays, you should love the person and hate the sin.

edit: people (espcecially mods, learn what homophobia means, its one of the most misused term that is just thrown out there, to try to discredit peoples arguments)

Homophobia means a prejudice against homosexuality.

The "-phobia" bit on the end is actually a bit of a misnomer, it doesn't really mean an irrational fear of homosexuality.

Also I agree that Dr.Grass didn't deserve to be banned for that comment, not when the topic is about whether being gay is a choice.

Yeah that ban in thi thread was extremely uncalled for. THen I saw the moderator that doled it out and it made a ton of sense. Especially considering I said something similar except I elaborated on it some.

if there are concerns about innapropriate banning the reasonable course would be to bring the issue to a higher moderator for review.

When my less-than-tranquil email was replied to it was obvious that it was a classic case of reverse-discrimination. If anything, the idiot that did it (caused me to get banned, not replied to my email) made me see him as a sad, attention-hungry and overly sensitive homo.Dunno exactly who's involved and don't care.

I almost left VG because of this shit. It's bad enough experiencing how whites get discriminated against in South Africa (you read that right) because they used to discriminate against blacks. Now the same angry voice is rising up in the gay man (not all of you, I apologize, but do realize that people going around shouting homo-phobe gives a bad impression). I'm sick of it.

I never had anything to do with apartheid. I have black and coloured friends.

I might not have gay friends, but I've never done anything to a gay person either.

So stop discriminating against me, because you're the one with all the anger - not me.

You really are digging yourself a deeper hole with using that slang.

Former something....

Having a few friends who are gay and Bi I must say its a mix of both born that way and choice. I have a few friends who became Gay and Bi later in life. One says he liked girls up until he had sex with a man. Now that individual in my opinion chose to be gay, he experimented sexually liked the experiance and then made the choice to have sex with other men.

However I also have had a recent friend come out of the closet who never dated a girl and while I had no clue he was gay he claims to be genuine and never to have liked girls. So in his case I'd say he was born with a disability.

Homosexuality is a disease as I'd call it. Its a genetic deficiency that occurs in a few people out of every million or so. Like autism or Downsyndrome, however I believe that many homosexuals are not actually gay by this disease, from personal experiances with my friends who are gay most are gay by choice.

The gay movement is not about respecting someone based on their genetic disposition, it is about converting people over to their belief.

Also while I believe that some people may be infected by this disease (Homosexuality) sleeping with an individual of the same sex is still a choice and as such homosexual acts are no less a choice then heterosexual acts.

Example as a Christian I believe in celebacy till marriage, if I never get married I will be celebate till death. Monks and Nun's take vows of celebacy and do not have sex during their entire lives, yet they are straight and are tempted to have sex constantly. As such someone who is gay and is attracted to people of the same sex, is not forced to sin (Have sex) the choice to sin is made.

I know a gay individual who was getting married to a lesbian. Both were apparently gay yet they loved each other and were getting married. They planned on having kids and apparently had sex. Now he got in a car accident and was paralyzed from the kneck down, so she left him. However it proves my point just because your gay doesn't mean you have an excuse to have sex with another man (Biblically or morally).

As such I believe in two types of homosexuality. The sinning type (Having sex with another man) and the good one (Choosing to abstain) rather then sin. Or the even better one find a woman you love and marry her regardless of whether you like men or not.

Fact is acts of homosexuality are for sure a choice, whether or not you like the same sex, maybe not. But in the end the final choice to sin, is still a choice! So I would say I disagree with both answers on the poll. I don't think having homosexual desires is a choice, but acting on those desires is!
