Forums - Microsoft - Square-Enix Troubles

We all aware by now how square-enix was down in profits from bad reviews and low sales of mind jack and also the final fantasy 14 mmo that bombed  that lead to cancel of several ips and also the exclusive they were working on for microsoft gun loco so  .........

My reason for starting this thread is this would it be better for square if microsoft were to own a majority of stake in square or have a buy out of them ??

SE has been in a downward spiral for a while now.  They're money makers aren't doing what they use to and their good stuff isn't selling like it should.  Microsoft would be stupid to buy them.

LOL

when you look at it tho the buy out would benefit microsoft due to the fact kingdom hearts , dragon quest , final fantasy 100 lol jk and they would own eidos , io interactive ,etc   and still own 25 percent of rocksteady due to selling it to time warner ..... would help microsoft out in their first parties

Square Enix does own Dragon Quest they only publish the games.

Enix owned the rights to Dragon Quest and Enix merged with Square.  SquareEnix now owns the rights to Dragon Quest in the same way they own Chrono or Mana.  This is why you don't see 'Revival of Mana' made by Brownie Brown and published by Nintendo or 'Chrono Break' made by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo.  And why Monoliths new game is called 'Xenoblade' instead of Xenogears or Xenosaga.

Sadly, if Yuji Horii wanted to break off and make Dragon Quest by himself or for another company, he wouldn't be able to.  And SE would NEVER give up one of the most solid money making series in the world.  WHat they need to do is help make the series more popular outside Japan so they can double their sales.  Its what they should have been doing for the last 10 years instead of putting all their marketing into only 2 main series.

But isn't that the case though?  Doesn't Horii own Dragon Quest and Enix was just riding off of its popularity?  I mean I seem to recall reading here that being the case.  I mean the way Dragon Quest is handled it seems like Horii makes the final decision on the titles.  To further explain; Dragon Quest has been tied down to Nintendo these past few years I'm sure if Wada and his execs were in charge there'd be Dragon Quest on everything, hell even with the PSPs popularity so high in Japan right now I'm surprised not even a spinoff has been announced for it.

No, Enix owned (and now SE) the rights to Dragon Quest.  Yuji Horii did indeed create it, but Enix put up the money for its development, along with the games that followed.  That's why SE also owns the Mana and Chrono series.

But yes, Horii does have a pretty special setup where practically anything he wants, he gets.  But that's partially because the series has continued to increase in sales for every title since the first game.

Also, it is curious why Dragon Quest is only on Nintendo this gen.  But considering how well all the DQ games have sold, each over 1 million and DQIX selling 5.3 million, I think it was definitely the right choice.  Also, no one has said anything, but I'm pretty sure SE and Nintendo have a backdoor deal for the series.  Considering how Nintendo is advertising the series outside Japan and the whole exclusivity of the series.

While I do think Nintendo made a deal with S-E for DQ, isn't there a DQ-FF crossover Itadaki Street game for the PSP?

I suppose that's what happens when a company that is only capable of making jrpgs focusses on the 360, to the neglect of consoles doing much better in Japan. I would probably care more if I had enjoyed a single game they made this gen.

They were paid to focus on the 360 and that happened when PS3 was struggling more.

The market has changed. Square and Enix used to rely on whatever platform was popular in past gens. Now they actually have to focus on all platforms to maximize sales. And it gets even more troublesome because western audiences prefer home consoles while Japanese audiences have really shifted to portable consoles.

hmm I thought Sony holds like a third of square-enix share, so a Buyout from Microsoft is not very likely

also square should have just stayed Exclusive to playstation, look how they struggle since they went multiplat

Nintendo owned 49% of Rare but that didn't stop MS from buying them.

Square had to go multi. It took years for PS3 to get off the ground and it doesn't dominate the market like past Playstation consoles did.

As probably one of the biggest Square-Enix supporters on this site. I know this may sound odd as hell but this needed to happen to them. Square got to the point where Sony got in 2006. They thought people were just going to buy their shit because it said Square-Enix on it. Hopefully this impact will strengthen the quality of their games so they don't continue to release garbage like Kane and Lynch/Gun Loco.

Stick to what you do best SE. Make JRPGS. No one said you HAVE to have the bestest graphics in the world.

Well said sir, you speak the truth. Although now that SE is publishing games like tomb raider, hitman and deus ex, I feel that jrpgs will be few and far between unfortunatlely.

They aren`t in enough trouble yet to even be considered as a possible buy I don`t think. They are struggling atm but I wouldn`t count them out just yet.

Xbox 360 wants to KinectPS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

Thats all due to their buyout of Eidos though.

Prioirty should have been

DS > PSP > Wii > PS3 > 360

Instead, for a while it went

360 > DS > PS3 > 0 > Wii > PSP.

Plain and simple, Square Enix cocked up very seriously, and are paying for it. They either need to get back to producing JRPGs for Japan, or eventually sink into insignificance.

You're greatly exaggerating their 360 support. The only exclusives Square Enix gave the 360 were Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant. Both of which were deemed mediocre by the critics and had little chance of being a hit on any platform. Star Ocean: The Last Hope was only a timed exclusive and could become the best selling game in the series thanks to multiplat sales.

The only big support Square Enix gave the 360 in recent time was making FFXIII multiplat. Which is primarily due to 360's great sales in the west, it was an easy port, and I believe MS requested it.

Their Wii support wasn't great. But Wii hasn't done particularly well at moving JRPGs either.

Square Enix has given PSP and DS a ton of support. Go check out all the games they've gotten over the years. So implying 360 was a bigger priority is just utter bullshit.
