can it be a sequel if no knowledge whatsoever of the previous game is required?

i guess that could be allowed, i said no sequal because it should be an self contained story that anyone can get into.

I should of mentioned in the OP that it should be an game that has no anti climatic ending that builds up for an sequel.

I figured that's what you meant but wanted to make sure.

With that taken care of I'd like to recommend the following games:

  • Endless Ocean 2 (Wii) - I still consider this to be a contender for best game of the generation for me.
  • Okami (Wii)
  • Little King's Story (Wii)
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii) - 60 to 100 hrs of single player bliss. (Metroid: Other M is also very cool but different)
  • If you haven't played a Resident Evil game yet, then play 4 (the Wii edition is best) or 5 on HD consoles. Haven't played 5 myself but 4 requires no previous knowledge of the series and is GREAT!
  • If you haven't played Majora's Mask it is an amazing game with a very unique story element to it. (available on virtual console)
  • Fragile Dreams (Wii) isn't the strongest game in the world when it comes to gameplay but the story is so masterfully executed it's worth it for that alone.

I could go on but I imagine you are mostly interested in games with an interesting story, which is why I'm not mentioning the likes of Mario Galaxy 2 or other games without story.
Also, in case it isn't obvious by now, I'm a Wii only owner

Add Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and its GameCube predecesor.
Awesome and very rewarding games.

indeed!

Also, if we're going to add GC games then consider Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for GC as well as Luigi's Mansion, Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (it's a remake of the first in the series so not a sequel).

On Wii I forgot to mention Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

You said it's playable on a PC. Do you realize I can list games from 1985 that are playable on the PC right now?

Maybe he did realize it... I mean, that would make his thread last for several years!

indeed, I have an PS3, 360 and an gaming Rig that can handle -2011 games at the moment, so yes i could. I dont have an wii anymore but there may be an reader that does.

Deus Ex and Half Life are gams from 1998-1999 that i have been meaning to get. only if they came in an bundle.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Valkyria Chronicles and Just Cause 2. Sure I guess Just Cause 2 is a sequel but there is absolutely no need to play the first.

Well so far, all I can muster is a top 10. I'll ponder this question more and see if I can get you a bigger list. For now, this is how it stands:

1) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

2) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

3) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

4) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

5) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

6) Earthbound

7) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

8) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

9) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

10) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

why no sequels?!?

This seems pretty futile, really. Some sequels are better than the originals, in fact there are quite a lot.. I mean, I can't even list a megaman of final fantasy game here that isn't 15 years old..even though said games are self contained..
