It's called "holiday stockpiling". Quite a regular tactic, even when supply-constrained. What's worse for a manufacturer, I ask you: having excessive unmet demand during the off season, or having excessive unmet demand during the holiday season? You're much more likely to lose potential customers if your holiday shipments are far too low than if your non-holiday shipments are. This is because most people buying a luxury item during the off season are more determined to find one than the ones who start searching during the holiday rush.
