The Toronto law firm McPhadden Samac Tuovi LLP has commenced a proposed class action
against Sony Japan, Sony USA, Sony Canada and other Sony entities (“Sony”) for the breach of
privacy. The lawsuit claims damages in excess of $1 billion, which includes having Sony pay
the costs of credit monitoring services and fraud insurance coverage for two years.

The plaintiff in the action is 21 year old Mississauga resident who has been an avid PlayStation
user for years. Natasha Maksimovic said: “If you can’t trust a huge multi-national corporation
like Sony to protect your private information, who can you trust. It appears to me that Sony
focuses more on protecting its games than its PlayStation users.”

The total number of PS3s in Canada should be around 1-2 million I'm guessing? Plus another 1-2 million PSPs?

That would be $250-$500 per system. How much do the credit monitoring and fraud insurance cost?

If a proportional lawsuit was filed in the U.S., it would be $10 billion going by population size... Ouch.

Shows where those "worst case" 24 Billion figures were coming from. 

The thing is though they are not planning to pocket the money. Rather going in the direction that the money must be used to make the security better and have services in place to cover the users if their data is used.

Because of that they are not your average greedy bastard looking to take advantage of someones feck up.

With the whole senate questions thing today should be interesting to see what happens.

Jumped the gun, havent they? SHouldnt they be waiting until the details of the hack come out before sueing namely who exactly is affected and what exactly was taken? Smells of opportunism to me that they are not waiting until we have more info.

From what i understand the credit insurance is only part of the $1Billion they are asking, or am i wrong?

on they want there 450 million in fees as well.
