Buttons are not going anywhere, says Iwata
Posted on May 3, 2011 by David Turnbull

Satoru Iwata has confirmed that buttons are not going anywhere with regard to the new controller for Nintendo’s next system.

I reported this already, but it’s been brought up a few times by readers, and there’s now a direct quote, so I figured I’d give it a little more love, because it’s pretty darn good news.

According to Iwata “we have never abandoned the + Control Pad and buttons for our game systems because we think these functions are advantageous when creating highly reactive games,” meaning that buttons have the best response times.

Following on from that, Iwata makes his stance perfectly clear, explaining that “I do not think Nintendo hardware will take on any of the current tablet forms as they are without buttons, to make our game devices.” But, Iwata does consider tablets “very interesting,” which does add weight to the touchscreen-in-the-controller rumors we’ve heard.
