But seriously, this whole "identity crisis" concept is FUD constructed from negative propaganda from the gaming media at large and also from Malstrom. What we're seeing, potentially, is Nintendo trying to take control of the existing industry while they continue to push boundaries outwards, or trying to. Whether it will succeed remains to be seen, but this is nothing other than a power play

 No at all, actually what identity crisis?  Games, consoles?... Probably Miyamoto, Iwata, Aonuma & sakurai felt that they needed a more powerfull console to convey their new ideas, nintendo is very healty economically speaking, they havent lost any money with the wii at all, so they are in a good position to begin a transition.

Also, why do you blokes pay so much attention to rumor?  It isn't as if the 3DS rumors were all  that accurate until right before launch.  Remember all those Tegra rumors? 

Nintendo clearly has a difficult task in front of them.  I predict that they will not only have to compete with M$ and Sony, but that other game services such as OnLive and Apple TV will begin to eat into the video game pie. Apple TV is very dangerous to the market because it can introduce cheap apps onto the TV. 

And that would be a good reason to turn more attention to the Hard Core market they abandoned 5 years ago?

Just looks like they are back peddling, and for what?  They made there beds with casuals why wont they sleep in it now?

 Chances are they won't gain much clients from MS and Sony anyway even if they go for it.

And apple and the rest of them will go after there Casual crowd and I have a feeling it wont be

to hard for them to convince them to jump in.

 

Ya there in a hard spot right now. But staying the course might be the best thing they ever do.

 God...would you people stop with the 'Nintendo wants the hardcore' BS!

They want to get third parties on board with their console! That's it!

And Nintendo is not for 'the casual market' either! Nintendo wants to get every type of gamer.

What do you mean what market it wants to cater to? It's either one or the other? Ever heard of PS2? Huh?

And we don't know the hardware of the   thing yet either. Most rumours are saying significantly more powerful now.

Maybe it's because Sony want the casual market back... and Nintendo want Both....
