Forums - General - News anchor mix up Obama and Osama

To get back on topic, Fox News has made this mistake many times before, mostly during the presidential election.  I wouldn't be suprised, and actually expect, them to sink to whatever method to increase support they can since the economic policies they support failed and the defense policies they support failed.

If the only thing you can do is call names, then you might as well use it.  You see it on the playground all the time...

Er... yes, this is why the same mistake was made like.... 6-8 times when Osama died... all by not Fox News.

I'm 99.9% certain I saw on FoxNews this morning that Usama bin Laden was killed.

Edit...hold up, is Usama another name of his or something?

It's an alternate spelling, yes.

I don't understand why Fox News can't just call him Osama like everybody else does.  Even on the main page of their website, it says Usama.

Because Usama I believe is the real spelling.

Is that on the long form of birth certificate (does Saudi Arabia even have multiple forms of birth certificates?)?

OK, I did do a bit more research. His name really is Usama, it just doesnt sound right for English speakers so some went with Osama. Some news actually did his name properly by putting the U instead of an O.

From what I remember he had a few "bins" in his name, right?

Usama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden is his full name.

That would have been a handful to write out in school. Probably easier than Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla though.

Osama is the English spelling, but the real spelling is in Arabic.  The 'O' sound is the English equivalent, which is why a lot of Arabic names with the same sound use the 'O' sound.  Mohammed is used over Muhammed for instance.

Who were these alleged mistakes made by?

Commentators, or news anchors? Because it it was the former of the two, then your point is utterly, and completely moot.

Who makes the decisions to show clips?  In the least, that is who you should blame for misleading news stories.

News anchors represent a news station, and if they hire untrustworthy ones then the news agency is untrustworthy.

its not a coincidence that the owner of Fox News is very conservative and his news station comes off the same way.  It would be like aruging that Pravda doesn't slant towards Communism even though its ran by the Communist Party.
