I don't think his comment was inferring that it was common place, but was recognizing the problem (here again in an inappropriate context).
It is not natural to take a man who wants and desires a wife and tell him that he can not get married. Furthermore, it is unbiblical.
1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
1Ti 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
1Co 7:1 Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
1Co 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
If the Catholic Church would just let go of this stubborn tradition and let priests marry, they would have a lot less problems in this area.
On topic, yes your story is unique, and that will certainly be one Cristmas you will not soon forget.
Could be a lot crazier/worse though. There was a tiger running around in a zoo in San Francisco on Christmas day that killed one man and attacked two other people.
The parents of the one who was killed by a tiger are devastated, and have decided to never celebrate Christmas again.
