I got that from... security experts in the field.  Also from people I know who in fact have gotten credit in other peoples name.

So... direct expierence and expert testimony.

Banks actually aren't required to get your SS# for example.

http://dailypaul.com/106790/opening-a-bank-account-without-an-social-security-number

There is plenty you can pull.  Heck my friend didn't need anything but a Name and an adress to get a credit card in his dad's name.

Then that was that bank's fault if that ever even happened.  And there are certain circumstances where the bank is required to obtain your SSN.  http://cpsr.org/issues/privacy/ssn-private/

Under Banks: "Banks and various others are required by the IRS to report the SSNs of account holders to whom they pay interest. If you don't tell them your number you will probably either be refused an account or be charged a penalty such as withholding of taxes on your interest."

Also, I find it funny how on that "expert's" website, there is a disclaimer that reads "Disclaimer: I am not an attorney or a professional financial advisor. Information you obtain from this website should not be considered as legal or financial planning advice. You should consult with a consumer attorney for legal advice and an accountant for individualized financial planning."  And nowhere on her site does it say that she went to business or law school to become this "expert", it is all only from personal experience.

Finally, if what you suggest is even true, getting a credit card with only your name and address, than I got some work to do cause I'm going to go in the phone book and start up hundreds of thousands of accounts.

thats what i was thinking. but why waste time in the phone book. yp.com is so much easier.

hell, why are people angry that their name and address were stolen. if thats all you need to get a CC. if thats all they need, you should be overwelmed with joy, every week you dont have a new CC in your name

I honestly don't understand what more some of you want from Sony. Yeah, they made a mistake. They have been getting called out for it for almost 10 days now. Now stop and give them some fucking credit for a minute. They have rebuilt the entire system within 2ish weeks and are offering incentives due to your lost ability to play on a FREE service that THEY offer and YOU don't pay for (excluding PSN Plus members of course). This is a horrible situation and Sony should take some of the responsibility, which they have, but many of your are putting a 100% full force blame on Sony disregarding that the actual criminal here is the HACKER or (S).

Now there has been no proof that anyone identity (which I can get out of the phone book by the way with the information that was stolen) or your CC numbers have been taken. Until that time if it ever comes, pipe down a little.

I for one am happy that Kaz took on the media here and actually bowed at them (that's a lot of humility coming from a Japanese person). I respect that they're working hard. Also they are willing to cover credit card changes.

yes some people are complaining that they are doing free trial to psn plus. saying its silly

also complaining about them saying "it wont happen again"

what do you expect them to do.

they rebuilt their network,  made it more secure, giving away free stuff, offering to pay for CC replacement, and help to prevent ID theft.

on top of that any of the information that was actually stolen, can be easily found on facebook ir the phone book. and people are saying they would have preferred that their CC# or SS# were stolen over the info that was.

i dont get some people, some people just bitch to bitch.

what would they have wanted sony to do.

That definitely is the most foolish thing I have ever heard.  If your CCN and SSN were stolen, you can bet it would take weeks, maybe even days, for someone to steal your identity.  This false anger over info that is freely given out on facebook or phonebooks/sites is ridiculous.  The only thing I'm concerned about is my password being stolen.  But I have already changed passwords that were similar and Sony is forcing everyone to change their passwords to even get on PSN again.  A password that can only be changed from the exact PS3 that the account was made on.

All I know is I can't wait for PSN to be back up.  I want those free goodies for being loyal.

I agree with you.

I dont think Sony need to do anything more than apologise and make the network is more secure... people want a free gift for a bit of inconvenience? gtfo.

From a  customer sweetner perspective I dont think they have done much but I didnt expect them to... this will cost them nothing but sounds ok in a PR sense.

(But the damage is possibly done in some people minds....  I'm talking potential new adopters).

Yep, Sony are better just making sure it doesnt happen again...but you have to think this rebuild is like a red rag to a bull though, its almost like a challenge.

yay, Kowenicki agrees with me. FRIENDS?

but anyway, this should also help other networks like xbl to be more secured. they probably will be doing something in order to not share the same fate of psn. so this incedent may help the industry

What Kowen said.

I was setting up a customers new computer yesterday (part time job) and I was surprised when they mentioned the PSN hack, the guy said that it cost Sony 40 billion dollars and everyone lost their credit card info. This guy was a 45 year old who couldn't tell difference between a N64 and an Xbox 360, but he still knew about the hack and misinterperted the medias exeggerated claims.

I was also surprised that my auntie told me to watch out for the hackers today, this lady didn't even know what a PS3 was before hand.

The general consumer media has been pretty misinformed on the topic and I think your point on new adopters could be correct, if the general consumer believes the exaggerated claims made by the media, then they already have that negative creditental next to Sonys name when it comes to buying a new console.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

What you describe there, is Sony's worst scenario. Media hyperbole doesn't need facts... and can destroy a lot for Sony. It's the times we live in.

Paying some money here and there is a minor problem. A longtime failing image could a big issue. Sony's brand is their most important asset.

I hope for Sony this doesn't happen again.
