2012 means we probably won't get any real news until TGS time (September) or worse Jumpfiesta (December). :(

I bet Level 5's still making it.

While I do think Level 5 is going to be making it, I wouldn't put other companies out of the question.  Remembe,r Yuji Horii said the game started development before DQIX even finished, which was pretty much done by the main group in Level 5 (including being directed by its founder, Akihiro Hino).

It would be pretty hard to have both games being made by the same team.  Though Yuji Horii could have just been saying the game was in early development at the same time as DQIX.  But I wouldn't put a company like ArtePiazza out of the question.  They finished DQVI a long time ago, eventhough it was delayed by the release of DQIX.

Though it could just as easily be a totally new group.

I think they probably meant planning work.  Level 5 is pretty much the money partner for Horii at this point, I don't see him "settling" for anyone else.

I do hope Genius Sonority and 8ing are doing a DQVII remake though.  God knows it needs it.

I don't think that's gonna happen anymore. 3DS is gonna get it if anyone does.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

I think that's possible.  Horii likes to "lead in" to a new DQ with older remakes, but releasing DQI-VI on the Virtual Console might be enough for him too.

Then again, he also confirmed DQX isn't the only DQ game still in development for Wii.  We might not get DQVII, but we're probably getting something else at least.

With Wii 2 announcement I'm starting to doubt that. It wouldn't be strange to see them launch on Wii 2. I still doubt any Japanese third party will anounce anything for the Wii anymore. I have the updated list and PS3 is leading 61 to 7 on third party games. Wii hasn't received any new announcement this year save for super sentai rangers cross or however it's written lol.

DQMJ2 Professional lol? That's not a new game. It's the same game released on the DS before 3DS was announced, but with added bonuses.

And announcements for the Wii from Japanese 3rd parties have stopped early last year.

Moving to Wii 2 would probably demand a total redo of assets and other things likely well into development.  Whatever DQ games are heading to Wii have likely been in the works awhile, I don't really think anything we might see (DQVIIr, Torneko 4 , Itadaki Street Wii, etc) makes much sense to switch right now.  Especially since it's pretty clear DQX isn't going to move over.

Wii also had Momotaru 2011 announced this year, but it was canceled due to the earthquake (and likely Konami's takeover). Mario & Sonic 2012 too, though that's a weirder situation (Nintendo published in Japan by contract) and Virtua Tennis 4 was announced also.  And some WiiWare stuff yet still, notably River City Ransom 2.

I still think the Wii will get a DQVIII port, while the 3DS will get the DQVII remake

That's nothing, that's only 1 game coming from a third party which isn't even Japan oriented and it's not getting released in Japan for the Wii so far (Virtu Tennis 4 has only been confirmed for 360 and PS3 in Japan).
M&S is a conjunct venture between Nintendo and Sega, much like the Fatal Frame Remake or Pandora's Tower. Thrid parties have not announced shit since last year. Wii is dead already. And those DQ games you name aren't exactly obligatorily in development. Those are just speculation, and remember Wii 2 dev kits might have been in devs hands for at least a year now, that could explain the total lack of Wii announcements and the more aggressive HD focus (so that Wii 2 could have ports ready)

That's endlessly more probable IMO.

Didn't they just release DQMJ2 Professional for the DS? I don't think it matters too much if the Wii successor is coming. It's not out for at least another year and announcements don't suddenly stop as soon as a successor is released.

I'm pretty sure DQX and Cafe will launch around the same time in Japan, and benefit each other in the process.  That's the beauty of backwards compatibility (see also; PS2 & DQVII).

Oh god, I hope not.  Everything Genius Sonority has done is a travesty compared to the original games.  The 3D Pokemon games they worked on are some of the worst Pokemon games in existance.  And while Drago nQuest Swords was marginally fun, I attribute that more to the fact that Yuji Horii has a firm grip on design and production of every Dragon Quest game.  And even then, the game is probably one of the weaker in the series.

If anyone should remake DQVII, it should be ArtePiazza, since they were the original developers of the game and did the remakes for DQIV-VI on DS.  But again, I don't think DQVII will get a remake.  Its probably the biggest DQ ever made.  Even compared to DQVIII and IX.

Frankly, I'd just like an HD port of DQVIII for PS3/Cafe.  Of all the DQ games, VIII is the one that I think is just perfect as it is and doesn't need updating.  However, when trying to play the game on an upscale HDTV, even with component cables, it looks really jagged and bad.  I'd even just settle for 480p support, though I'd wish for 720p or 1080p.
