Forums - Nintendo - If Nintendo really is going after the core crowd with Cafe R they too early

If they are going after core gamers, then I suggest they start making...

1. PS3's/PS4's

2. 360's/Nextboxes

Because that's what the majority of today's *cough* "core" gamers see as consoles/brands worth their attention.

Early? IMO, yes. In the beginning the Nextendo will be getting a good portion of ports from this gen's HD consoles, and after MS and Sony release the successors to their consoles, it'll get the Wii treatment because as far as power goes, it'll probably be quite pale compared to these two, failing to reach PS2-like audiences that made it the dominator of its generation despite being very much inferior to GC/Xbox power-wise. It simply lacks the appeal/hype. Price and library  will also be factors, and while sure, you can get COD X on N6, why do so if you can get it on the cheaper PS3/360, with more games available on both to boot? Because that's how it'll be in 2012.

They are lining themselves up for failing to achieve this objective... as long as PS3 and 360 exist and keep gaining strength with new ways to play, new games, and likely lower prices, they won't make a serious dent.

you know what you say is sensible, but you're assuming WAY too many things in you're statement.

what makes you think PS4 and Nextbox will be more powerful than Cafe? Is it because thats how it was this gen. And how do you know Cafe is releasing in 2012 for sure? Just because Iwata said mid 2012 at earliest? That doesn't mean anything. Look basically what I'm saying is yes Nintendo is going HD and is obviously trying to recapture hardcore audience, but other than that, we don't know anything Nintendo will surprise us.

Eh? You're just counter-assuming.

Recapture what hardcore audience? The one that had left them around the time of the N64? Good luck with that. Also, of course they are going HD, what would be the point of a non-HD successor? Awesome graphics in 640x480?

Even hardcore gamers buy affected on hype...some will surely buy it, since it will be the most powerful console for 2-3 years. I dont think nobody like to wait 2-3 years to have a "better Iphone", for instance.

This point has already been discussed to death in the other 10 threads dedicated to Cafe or Nintendo's new Doom simulation

Why another Thread?

couldn't find the other threads (or I was just too lazy to look hard)

I don't think Nintendo is doomed, far from it, I just think that it could be a little early for what their strategy is shaping up to be

How could you miss the last half dozen or so nintendo/cafe is doomed threads.

"It's like, two times the power of the PS3 and 360!"

"What games does it have?"

"Ugh... almost the same ones"

Pointless. Consoles are frequently bought based on games available and what is popular among your friends. Nobody buys a console for pure power, a console is bought for games. It's rumored to be somewhat more powerful than the PS3, with a CPU similar to the 360's. Will that make a big difference for multiplats? Unlikely. How many third parties will jump on the ship with exclusives? I'm gonna bet... barely any.

Maybe. It's a risk, especially if the third party support is all multiplatform stuff shared with the PS360. I can't really see people abandoning the HD Twins just to play the exact same games.

No, but then it also serves as a defensive mechanism towards further drift of Nintendo fans

You know nothing, NOTHING about the thing. Why so set on calling it a failure already? At least wait until it's revealed/released to doom it.

A CPU similar to 360's? You know nothing about tech.

"The 1080P compatibility will be partially thanks to the custom-built tri-core IBM PowerPC chipset that'll serve as the Wii 2's brains. It's going to be the same kind of setup that you'll find on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. Only, Nintendo will allegedly up the clock speeds to beat out the three 64-bit, 3.2-Ghz cores of Microsoft's competing device, among other enhancements."

Well, apparently these guys don't know anything about it either, right? Read the thing, it's quite informative.

Also, why am I calling it doomed? Because Nintendo is going into territory it got repeatedly annihilated in. It's not gonna suddenly change.

I very rarely look at doom threads (for any system). This is just something I thought about today, and wanted to know what others think. I edited my original post to reflect this.

I started making videos for youtube; check them out.

You should congratulate me. I destroyed the vile red falcon and saved the universe. I consider myself a hero.

I think they are taking a middle way. Keeping the casuals while trying to attract more core gamers. GTAV could bring a few hundred k players who want new hardware maybe, and they could manage to attract a few more with some exclusives.

There is a crowd out there that is neither casual nor core. The kind of players that play CoD, GTA, sports games, etc. Actually, these were called casuals last gen. They may not seek deep experiences or great graphics, but buy more AAA games. I'm speculating here, though, I don't have a deep understanding of the market.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

Now that Nintendo is going HD it should be much easier to port games not only from the Playstation 3 and 360 but also probalby from the next-gen Playstation and 360.

As long as Nintendo has more power under the trunk than 360/PS3 then it should be relatively easy to scale different ports back and forth between Project Cafe and the PS4/720.  PC games give us performance settings to scale our games to all the time.

Since we have already hit the point of diminishing returns in graphics I don't think the difference between the PS4 and the Wii 2 will be that drastic.

Nintendo needs to be able to differentiate itself out from the 360 and PS3 though.  The only way they can do that is excellent 1st party, differentiating features,  better looking versions of games than 360/PS3 have, and if they are lucky a couple AAA 3rd party exclusives.

Most anticipated games of 2011:

Uncharted 3,Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Rocksmith

Modern Warfare 3, Super Mario 3D
