Forums - Gaming - South Australia to introduce R18 rating for games

Yes, after .... who knows how many years.

South Australian Attorney-General John Rau has taken the R18+ for games issue into his own hands today, declaring that his state will introduce the adult rating regardless of the decision made by other states and territories at the upcoming Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (SCAG) meeting in July.

Currently, the introduction of the R18+ classification requires the unanimous agreement of all federal, state, and territory ministers. However, in March this year, Federal Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor told GameSpot AU that the federal government would be considering "other options" should the R18+ issue not reach a unanimous "yes" vote come July. O'Connor hinted at the possibility that each state and territory could adopt different arrangements should consensus not be reached.

I can see plenty of interstate sales should SA be the only ones to do this. Let's just hope they don't make the ratings system too confusing. It will only work to discourage publishers even more than the OFLC's ludicrous classification price.

A great day for gaming in Australia!

It was about time. What's the point of censoring games? If their point was games are for kids... just introduce the 18 rate. I hope it extends to all the country.

not exactly: an game can be still be refused classification if it goes above R18 essenitally having it that Adults cant choose for themselves and that they need less voilent games or else they will become murders and rapists.

its dissapointing because any kid can go on the internet and watch people brutely murder other people, and have them tell them how to do it. But an game were you do it in make believe land and not told how to do it, is wrong and should be banned.
