As for doubters ridiculing themselves etc... I'm sure that's what he thought would be the case too, and why he didn't do it in the first place, which would of taken little effort.
However that shows a distinct lack of attention to the polls.
The number of "birthers" was only rising, among all parties... and had steadily been rising before trump.
Something like 50% of americans (not republicans) thought it was a valid question.
The brither craze wasn't scaring the middle.. the middle was buying into it. (Which is silly considering the lack of new "evideince.")
Though Obama himself was leaving open that "Door or doubt" which allowed people to shift into it.
