Reported by Sony themselves.

It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained.

May, possible, could have, may have, might have, could be, could of been... what do you actual know?

You assume the worst and hope the best.

So I should assume a roaming black hole is going to destroy the world before I finish typing this

No, but you should use common sense.  true, they say may but that pretty much means they did.

You're acting as if there's nothing to be concerned about because they either didn't use the information or they're doing some horribly uncomplicated scene because you don't know anyone that has had their information used.  That is just plain stupid.

I don't know how else to tell you that.  The possibility that someone has all the information tied to your PSN account is absolutely certain (whether they took it or not) so people should be worried.  They should take every precaution to change their information on the PSN.  And while it's not certain, it's likely they may have your credit card info so it's very reasonable to keep a very close eye on your credit reports.

You also keep saying there's no reports of anyone using that information but their is talk on Gaf of people getting scam emails and even the guy I share an office with got his first piece of spam ever on his mail account tied to his PSN.  It's not nearly unreasonable as you make it that someone took that information.

One more time-- they did not say for certain they took the information, what is certain they had access to it.  Why wouldn't you assume they took it?

-edit-

(and that last bit was a purely rhetorical question, it's pointless to argue with people with blinders on)

I'm not saying you should do nothing, keep an eye out for scams and check your credit card statements but thats not a big deal, if the only issues so far are of spam on emails I think Sony is doing pretty good seeing how theres a million ways to get someones email, there's nothing to panic over just be a little more cautious why is everyone thinking it's such a big deal

EDIT: also the possibly that someone hacked into your computer and got all your personal information which is more then is tied to psn is also absolutely certain

ive recieved an email from sony telling me that an unautorised person has gained access to my data. i received it about 3 hours ago, has anybody else received anything?

Are you from the UK, the fact that some people are getting emails and some aren't is interesting so far everyone that said where they are from said UK so it could be the laws if you don't live in UK they might have conformation someone actually looked at it and it's not just the had ability to acess that everyone is panicing about

yes dude, im from the UK. Ive spoke on some other forums and they said although what is stated in the email sounds like it's been personally sent out to me, it actually isnt and that everyone who has signed up are going to be receiving it as a warning.

Maybe because im a PS member theres some sort of priority. I was also one of the first 500,000 people (in the UK) to sign up for PSN on launch day because i recieved some free gifts for doing so off sony, whether thats given priority i dont know. I suppose more research is needed.

Im just glad that the email isnt actually a personal email and its just a warning for all members.

Q: Was my personal data encrypted?
A: All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack.

Q: Was my credit card data taken?
A: While all credit card information stored in our systems is encrypted and there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. Keep in mind, however that your credit card security code (sometimes called a CVC or CSC number) has not been obtained because we never requested it from anyone who has joined the PlayStation Network or Qriocity, and is therefore not stored anywhere in our system.

Bold is reasuring but underline is scary so it's a draw :)

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
