Forums - General - Do people still read books anymore?

Just finished the two books I was reading (From hell and Foundation) and I'm about to start two books I recently purchased.

This first is Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic and the second is a collection of Australian essays on atheism called The Australian Book of Atheism.

I probably read about 3 or 4 books a year. Never really been keen on it, but the odd book does capture my interest.

I don't think it's been much of a detriment to my comprehensive or grammatical skills. My vocabulary is probably greater than average, and I've always been a good reader/writer.

For school, just the ones I had to read, same thing now in the university, only that I prefer the stories I read at school over the law school things I have to read now.

Because of that, I dont read if Im not obligated.

But I do remember liking some books from my school years, like the catcher in the rye and 100 years of solitude, only that unlike a movie, its tedious to read again a whole book you liked once, could be like rewatching the whole DBZ series or playing a huge RPG again xD

Is that book any good? I've been meaning to read it.

I liked it, it might not be for everyone but if it helps, its very recognized and considered a great book by guys who are into them. Its very long and sometimes you can get confused since lots of characters in different times share the same names.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Hundred_Years_of_Solitude See if that helps, I recognize it can be a pain reading it sometimes but in the end it was worth it at least for me.

The book is only 480 pages long (accoring to the website of the book's publisher here in Romania), so that's definately not what I would call "long" (a book has to be close to or be over 1000 pages to be considered "long"). I'll definately pick it up when I have the time.

Yes, people still read books. Just look at the sales of Amazon's Kindle (which is awesome btw).

With the amount of time I spend commuting I tend to get through a book every 1-2 weeks.

Yes, a lot. Even in a gaming site like this one, with all it's teenage nerds and stuff, you can find a lot of people reading, so overall situation must be good.

Nerds typically read a lot. Maybe geeks aren't heavy readers, and definately some of the other stereotypes, like dorks, jocks, cheerleaders etc.

I bought a kindle recently and have been reading Isaac Asimov's robot series (Caves of steel and The Naked Sun, currently reading The Robots of Dawn). They're pretty good and free, and they will last me for a couple of months.

I've been willing to put an effort on reading more because it stimulates my imagination and expands my vocabulary. I find that I'm constantly using the dictionary function.

I like Asimov. You know the Robot series is linked to the Foundation series and Empire series? Are you going to read all the way to Empire and Earth?

Maybe old school nerds that dabble in stuff like LOTR, Star Wars etc., but not this gen man. Just take for instance what most people here would consider as a game with a good story and interesting characters.

That's right. I originally was going to read Foundation but I decided to start from the beginning chronologically. Just started reading Robots and Empire. I downloaded a collection of his works to my kindle (He's dead anyways)  and I'm set.

I do!
