Get the 3DS, it's backwards compatable with all DS games (guitar hero may be the exception, but I'm not sure).  The extra cost is worth it given all the fantastic games coming out for the system, which will surely include Pokemon gen VI in a couple of years.

And there is also the GB/GBC/SGG and hopefully soon GBA games one can download onto the 3DS

Those are the key words. By the time those games come out it will have gotten a price cut.

so all the games until the price cut will suck, Wow! maybe if he is going to spend the money he can spend it once rather then twice. So in the end he doesn't save money and has to buy two devices by your logic.

BUY THE 3DS.

3DS battery life is only poor when playing 3DS games. When playing DS games, the battery life is 7-8 hours. I have a first gen DS handheld, which had a battery life of 8-10 hours, and I can tell you that 5 years after purchase, the battery is still holding full charge.

7-8 hours is still pretty decent, I would advise you get a 3DS handheld. Paying $150 for a DS, for primarily one game is a lot. Yes you will get other Pokemons and handheld titles, but nothing new is coming out for the DS anymore. If you get the 3DS, you know Nintendo will make a new 6th generation Pokemon, and you're going to want that.

Also some of 3DS's games are looking to be quite good. Imagine playing Resident Evil with resolution almost as good as on consoles. Super Mario, Zelda remake, Starfox remake, Kid Icaurs, and Mario Kart are just the begining.

It would be silly to get a DS now. From my experience of buying a console at the end of life, you'll play it for 6 months to a year, and then put it down. Old gen DS games just won't excite you in a year, at least not as much as they do now.

Why arer you putting words in my post? Did i say they suck? No. Is it enough good games to justify a purchase? PLUS, is he interested in those games by his post? No. He wanted pokemon atm. 3DS can wait atleast till it gets enough games that justify a purchase for him. But by his post, it doesn't look like that is coming for a while.

Dude, you're getting things mixed up.  The first sentence is so different than the second two. If he is interested in 3DS games, then I'd lean more towards getting a 3DS or at least getting the cheapest DS around until E3 drops, where we'll get much more info on the 3DS itself. Even then, at the moment, it seems most games coming out by the end of the year warrant a purchase for any fan. I list:

I know the list of games, and they are not so different. Saying the games suck is harsh. I would just say that at the moment they do not justify a purhase. We don't even know if half of the games on that list are going to be good. I think he should wait for the 3ds and get the cheaper ds lite to feed his pokemon hunger and even play some GBA games.

Get a 3DS - you'll be getting one eventually anyway, so why wait? :)

DS Lite. If it ever becomes worthwhile to get a 3DS it won't have cost much.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

It's backwards compatible, so if you get a 3DS you're getting a DSi with it!

Save yourself having to buy two devices

No you're not, you're not getting the DSi battery life which he said was a concern.

And believe me, the 3DS battery life is pathetic.

You might be right, I don't have a 3DS** - But lots of people say it's fine

** Reason: I can wait for the upgrade - unlike some people (even though my DS stopped working recently )
