They already have a paid service, plus members will get some kind of "oops we are sorry for the f*ck up, here's your reward for being patient enough even if you weren't" item on the PSN.

Plus is more like a vip club. The money they make on plus would be nothing if they started making everyone pay to play online.

That's not happening. They would lose one of their bragging rights against their competitors of having free online.

Its going to remain free this gen and probably next gen too. They have nintendo and the PC for competition, Live will charge but they are the only ones.

This isn't such a big deal for them. Making a game probably costs them more.

eh, I think they will charge next gen.  As it is they make the developers pay for the bandwidth, which keeps some of the smaller indie developers off of their system.  No way in hell will they charge this gen though.

I think they might make it so that plus will be integrated into PS4, they will keep the online free, but have plus available from day 1 with a lot more features than it currently has.

If they do something like charge for online, then they will lose a lot of people from the countries where PC gaming is popular. They will certainly not gain any more people buying their systems.

Plus you have to remember that Sony is a japanese company and they will be at first competing with nintendo, so they will probably have free online gaming. Nintendo isn't and will never really will be charging for online.

and having it down probably isn't costing Sony all that much money, as it is a free service.  So...

/end thread

Plus isn't really paid service and as long as the psn is down people won't be buying/renting movies or buying gams online. I normally rent movies from the psn but since it's down I got something off direct tv...sony just lost some money see?

plus is the paid model Sony opted for.  They aren't going to come out with a paid model, and then switch it up a year later with a different paid model.  The whole idea behind this thread is pretty ridiculous to be honest with you.  This wouldn't make good business sense for Sony to make a previous free service cost money in the middle of a cycle.  Plus is the closest you will get to it.

As far as money Sony is losing, I honestly don't think it will be that large of an amount.  While Sony is losing on on some money from digital sales (most of which goes to the company that actually makes whatever product is being sold)  Sony also has to pay the cost of having the system.  All those servors and transactions fees aren't free you know.  So while Sony is losing money in some areas, they are saving in others.  So, realistically, Sony isn't losing all that much money here.

Its ridiculous to ask a simple question lol? Sony was the same company that said people can get two jobs to get a ps3. Yes plus was something th opted for but I find it strange that they haven't boasted about the number of users who got plus (been waiting for those numbers for a while).

@mantlepiecek

thanks for response, I was a little concerned I would have another bill to pay lol

depends on the question really.  Would it be ridiculous for me to make a thread asking everybody if my farts stank?  probably.

Just as it is ridiculous to start a thread asking a question with an obvious answer.  common sense really.

I hope not paying for internet, buying games, and now gotta pay for a consoles online services to much for some people. Only reason Microsoft does it cause well they love money ALOT.

That's a weird statement. Are you saying Sony doesn't love money a lot?

I doubt Sony would change the way PSN is set up right now. It is always a possiblity in the future though.

I remember in the past they used to market online gaming being a free service. But they don't anymore so they are definitely planning to charge in the future.

However, it won't happen this gen. They would probably get sued as they have marketed it for free onine gaming in the past.

How is it an obious answer? Do you work for sony? Do you know how money they make off of movie rentals an purchases? Millions of customers are without a service they use and are possibly getting what they want elsewhere. With all that has been going on and geohot and hackers it isn't wrong to wonder if they might charge. Anyway my question was answered so whatever.

There are plenty of free programs from MS.  I think the free to play online part of PSN had more to do with Sony trying to play catch up to LIVE.  If they were first to the market, you would be paying for PSN like PSNplus users. It is a main selling point for the PS3, they would not be able to rescind it now.

I guess your right who knows what the future of PSN would be I and many others woud perfer it free so we don't have something else to pay of even if it's only $5.

There's 2 questions being asked here

1) Will Sony push people into paying for PSN use more in the future?

2) Will this be because of the recent attacks?

1) It seems very likely that Sony will make some attempt to do this. I very much doubt it will be that you need to pay to play online, but I'm sure there will be features added to plus (or taken away from the existing free service).

2) I really don't see why this would be it. More likely it will be timed to coincide with the PS4 release imo.

nah the last thing they want to do now is to add a price tag to the free service and piss some ppl off even more
