Forums - Sales - wii to sell its 300k console in australia this week

Well it looks possible that the ps3 wil sell 200k within a year of its release. So much for that wii record

Well actually the Wii sold over 200k in its first year and has sold 300k in just 1 year and 2 weeks.(Wii launched Dec 7th 2006) The PS3 is doing extremly well down under however it won`t beat the record set by the Wii. The 360 is starting to struggle though and will be overtaken by the PS3 relatively soon. Australia has been Sony territory for the past two generations, so the success of the Wii is quite impressive down under.

I'm just referring to the 200k record in the first year record which was broken by the wii and was previously held by the ps2. Although I agree that the ps3 will not reach the 300k mark as fast as the wii. In terms of long term projections it's too early to tell.

One thing I will say though is that the Australian market seems to be very pro sony when you consider the ridiculously high launch price of the ps3. I didn't think it would reach 200k untill well into it's second year.

I agree, for such a high launch price it sold incredibly well down under during launch and has continued to sell solidly. It is even now outselling the 360 on a weekly basis. It could definately push the Wii in the later years of this generation as Australia has been Sony territory for the past two generations.

When the ps3 reaches the $400 price in Australia then things will get very interesting. So I think things will remain as they are for another year and the battle will truly start some time in 2009.

Well the cheapest PS3 sku is currently $699.99, so I don`t see it hitting $400 down under until at least late 2009. The real competition should indeed begin then as you said however the Wii should be down to at least $299.99 by then, hopefully $200-$250 though. The 360 will be definately struggling by then, but will amass very respectable lifetime figures in Australia, it simply wont get near the Wii or PS3 though.

I agree. Christmas 2009 seems about right. I just think that mass market pricepoint is around $400 in Australia and obviously by that time both the ps3 and wii should have most of their biggest titles out. I just hope I can get my hands on FFXIII by 09

If the PS3 does get down to $400, I will definately get one as I don`t want to miss out on God of War III or FFXIII. I loved GOW I & 2 and dont want to miss out on the next iteration. Those two games plus MGS4 and a few others make the console well worth a purchase to me.

Branko as you are also from Australia do you know any other's who also own PS3's apart from yourself, none of my mates who all owned a PS2 have purchased one nor do the plan on doing so until its much cheaper. I would love to go hands-on with the console for an extended period but no one I know has one, have you encountered a similar scenario or do you know heaps of people of own one?

I'll be getting one early next year, cuz that's when I'll put the money down for not only the PS3 but a nice HDtv, I'm also hoping they pack in the dualshock 3 by the time I get it as well as have the GPU at 65nm.
