Forums - Gaming - Has voice acting ever made or broken a game for you?

So I just picked up Arc Rise Fantasia on the cheap, and so far it's exactly the kinda JRPG i'm into, with the one glaring exception. The english voice acting is incredibly bad. Everyone sounds completely board to be battleing giant monsters, and the accent on all the wrong syllables makes me think this was acted by a english as a second language class. That said, It hasn't RUINED the game for  me ( I simply shut off the voices), but it certainly could have for many other players.

What games have you had trouble getting through do to poor voice acting, and conversly, any weak games that might have made up for it with great voice acting? (Tales of Symphonia :DotNW springs to mind, not the best Tales, but the acting had me engaged to the characters enough to stick through it)

nope mechwarrior 4: mercenaries has the worst voice acting ever... it makes star ocean 4 and final fantasy x look like oscar winning performances

and I still loved it. So no for me.

For me, voice acting is probably the the lowest end of the totem pole of importance for me. If the gameplay isn't fun, or the story or characters aren't interesting, the best voice acting won't do a thing for me matter.

Plus imo, most disney movies beat almost any videogames voiceacting.

Heavenly Sword and Enslaved would have been rather ordinary games if it weren't for the amazing character animation and voice acting.

err... I was stating I loved mechwarrior 4 despite it's aweful awful VA

how dare thee what? it's my favorite game... I didn't mean FFX was at star ocean 4's level voice acting. I was just stating it's not near the best voice acting has to offer imo. And that Mechwarrior 4 was significantly below that.

conduit 2 voice acting is so bad it went from i will get later to skip it.

GTA had good voice acting, i like Brucie, he was hilarious. Lara Croft voice is fantastic. Kratos, the entire freaking Uncharted cast, from both games. Mass Effect, My David Solid Snake Hayter. Ice Cube in BLOPS only improved its campaign and his addition only made it better than MW2. id be here all damn day

I stopped playing FFX partially due to the voice acting. It was only a part, yeah, but it were a big part.

yes hellgate london it was atrocious but as with most things it is the dialogue as well , take uncharted even those actors would sound bad in hellgate having to speak village idiot.

I was going to bring up Heavenly Sword as well, though the game should also be given props for the excellent bullet time gameplay (can't remember what they called it). The Kai missions were crazy-fun, though overly easy if you knew how to manipulate the system (I was killing guys lightning-fast with the arrows, firing them before anyone even appeared and then slowing the arrow down to pop the guy straight in the face).
