Forums - General - Jan Brewer vetoes "Birther" bill

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110419/pl_nm/us_arizona_birther

Basically Arizona had a rather redundant law cooking up requiring presidential candidates to produce the long form of their birth certificate, which seems nonessential but also a nonstarter, but the law had much stranger portents including requirements for candidates to produce "Baptismal and/or circumcision" certificates," which raises certain shocking implications of a more openly bigoted intent in the bill

She also tossed out a bill regarding firearms on college campuses for being too broad

Looks like Brewer's more mild than i gave her credit for, and if so she's doing a good job of keeping the nuts in check, for now...

I'm surprised that a state could even do that.

It seems like it would be out a states jurisdiction to mandate requirements for a position that represents the entire country.

That and that it filters by religion (or at least is leaning that way with the baptism/circumcision requirements). But the Arizona legislature is apparently determined to ignore Federal jurisdiction. Next thing they'll hold a vote on their own terms to determine if Arizona citizens should pay their income taxes :/

Why does my state have to have so many radical republicans? Seriously don't understand why these were even created in the first place.

That's basically what she said when she vetoed it.

i dont see anything wrong with the a presidential candidate be required to show their actual birth certificate if they are going to run.   you are required to be born in the states to be president so why shouldnt they prove it.  as far as im aware most states wont even let you get a drivers license with a certificate of live birth.   so why, if it exists,  hasnt it been produced.   the only reasons not to produce are if it doesnt exist or if you just want to play political games with the topic.  if obama didnt relish the issue then it obviously would have been produced, if it existed...

I think it's a pretty pointless requirement anyway. If you moved to the USA at the age of one month, you'll be just as American as someone whose parents moved to the USA a month before he was born.

Obama doesn't show it so that everyone who thinks he was born outside the US looks like a racist.

If he did show it, the people who hate him would still hate him... it would just be that much harder for his party to label them as bigots.

This entire issue is stupid and a huge waste of money and time.

Yeah.  I don't see why being a natural born citizen matters in this day and age.

Still, it seems like Obama intentionally has gone to leave the slightest room for doubt as a trap.

Since he could of done more to prove it with practically zero effort.

In the end it my hurt rather then help.

While few people believe he was born in another country... something like nearly half of America thinks it's a valid question... and the number of people from all parties who thinks he wasn't born in the US has risen.

When you change the question  to "Have no doubts"... less then half the country "has no doubt" he was born in the US.
