ps2 has to great of a library to die down right now,i mean im still playing it alot i just bought tekken 5 for it and still plan to buy more games
10 year plans work if people still want your system 5+ years from now ...
In order for that to be the case you have to have a massive library of high quality games that will be readily available and inexpensive (new/used) 5+ years from now. This is entirely dependant on your system selling well enough that it gets massive third party support ...
Basically, if you sell more than (as a guestimate) 80 Million units in 5 years you stand the chance of having a 10 year lifespan.
| Quartz said: Sony and 10 year plan springs to mind... Could the PS3 be expected to do the same? Who knows.... |
Only if Sony manages to sell around 100 millions of PS3... and only if the console is the clear winner by a wide margin, like the PS2 and PSone
it's not 8 years till March... however it will still be selling well then so ok.
In fact for Europe has it even been out 7 years yet? [checks wiki] ah yes, it was 7 years in Europe 4 weeks ago.

I wonder if the PS2 could reach 200 million consoles sold by the end of it's 10 year life

Probably not ...
By the end of the year the PS2 will have sold (roughly) 10 Million consoles worldwide in 2007, in 2008 this will probably fall to about 5 Million consoles, in 2009 this will be about 2 or 3 Million consoles, and (finally) in 2010 it will probably be below 1 Million consoles. Basically it will sell 10 to (maybe) 15 Million more consoles from where it currently sits.
i cant see the end of the ps2 for while aslong as people lke it and play it, i got quite a few friends who have had a ps2 for years and they stil love it they just want to play a game there not bothered about graphics just want play a game on a system they like, if the games keep coming out then they will proberly keep selling
