I hope that this rumor turns out to be true. I'd be okay with them using a blur-ray drive. Why not?

I doubt the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft will be much more powerful than their current systems.  It certainly won't be the same as the jump we saw from PS2 and Xbox to PS3 and X360.  Not even close.

Epic would beg to differ with you ^^ and considering so far all there graphics based predictions have come true i trust them :P

they released a tech demo of the unreal engine 4 and how they belive it will look on ps4 / 720. lest just say it was much larger jump than ps2 to 360 xD

I've seen the demo.  It is basically their UE3 with DX11 shaders added.  It also took 3 GeForce 580 GPU's to render it.  Sony and MS's next console will not have the same graphical muscle as 3 GeForce 580's.

As for it being a larger jump from the current systems than the PS3/X360 were from the PS2/Xbox?   You're the only person I've come across to believe that.  And I speak to gamers and developers everyday.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

I hope not, mandatory 100% installs is the way of the future. Of course you can still have that with blu-ray, but why waste money on that when every game is gonna fit on 1 DVD anyway, since it will be installed onto the harddrive?

why would Nintendo buy into a Holographic data storage company and push the 35 U.S.C. 103 ( c )(3) patent, and then use a format that easy to pirate like blu-ray and not a proprietary format that can't be copied.

@ digitalnasties I was thinking the same thing. So far nobody has mentioned this. But if you think about it, isnt holoraphic storage still a working progress? last time I remember they still pretty pricey to mass produce for the general market.

If your volumes are reasonably high, besides licencing fees, the premium on producing a system with a Blu-Ray drive or a DVD drive should not be that significant in the next generation; and, unless you think they will go digital distribution only (a bad choice IMO), it would make sense to base your next system on Blu-Ray. Of course, using a Blu-Ray (or modified Blu-Ray) drive doesn’t necessarily mean that Nintendo will include movie playback.

Gaming site Maxconsole.net, citing information leaked to Logic-Sunrise.com by a Nintendo France marketing employee, is reporting that a new Nintendo console will be launched worldwide in the third quarter of 2010. This "Wii 2" will reportedly get a Blu-ray drive, and support 1080p for games and movies.

An official announcement will reportedly happen just one month before launch date. In the intervening months, "huge publicity and viral marketing will be utilized to create buzz" (so this post is ultimately contributing to that, right? Damned if you do...).

Allegedly, there will be the option to trade in old Wii's for "Wii 2" consoles.

This rumor comes just after Nintendo's profit fell by more than half in the six months from April, hit by a slump in console sales (it sold 5.75m Wiis between April and September, far fewer than the 10m it shifted in the same period last year).

Some analysts are suggesting that a completely new console offers its best hope of reviving hardware sales.

Sony, on the other hand, has benefited from a reduction in the price of the PS3. "The price cut on the PlayStation 3 was effective because people are getting a high spec Blu-ray disc player for a good price," said Yusuke Tsunoda, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities.

My guess is it will be using the Blu-ray technology - but some variation like Wii did with DVD.

2010 is past

My mistake.  Edited it with the more recent article.

Because of the older article, I'm calling more wishful thinking on the part of the Wii haters.

Are you calling me a Wii hater?  That's news to me.  I've been critical at times - but I don't consider myself a hater by any means.

Does it really matter if they use Blu-ray in the end?  Blu-ray is more owned by Panasonic than Sony FYI.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
