360 owners have third-party parity, and therefore no cause to bitch about anything. Having been consistently screwed over by third parties, our whining entitlement exists and is valid, an entitlement that only Nintendo-only owners have a right to at this point in time (and a right we've held for more than 15 years) Though i'll grant this is overreaction because of a non-announcement, never underestimate how far we've been thrown out into the cold |
My point is that whining like this is just silly and it happens far too often. The small amount of the Wii, DS or 3DS audience that cares about games like Oblivion, Battlefield, Gears of War and such are insubstantiale to all the big players in this whole scenario. That small audience is a result of a bunch of bad or good business decisions and pointing fingers and whining isn't going to change that, the only hand that can make a change is Nintendos and they don't seem to care or they don't seem to have the ability to make any serious changes this late into the generation.
These are also products, you aren't entitled to anything at all, the only power you have is that you can choose which console to buy and then everything after that is up in the air. Maybe if there was 5 million upset Wii gamers, then maybe Nintendo would make a huge step of getting third party support, but obviously the audience that cares about games like The Last Story, No More Heroes and Madworld are small and so all the publishers are far more willing to sell games to the audience of 20 million that prefers to buy games like Carnival Games, Just Dance, Mario, Wii Whatever, Sports Active, Deca Sports and so on.
It'd be like a PS3 fan whining about why RTS games aren't coming to the PS3, but they go to every other platform, it's obviously because the RTS audience on the PS3 is small, the console doesn't have the right hardware to pull it off well enough and they are better off releasing another shooter, because they know they'll definently make money that way. Sure, they tried a couple of times, but it never worked out, no point in trying for the fifth time expecting a different result, especially when so much money and time is on the line.
Nintendo had a big hit this generation with Wii Sports, they then got excited and smart and decided to base their whole Wii approach around the Wii Sports concept and audience. The marketing was primarily aimed at a specific audience, the hardware was aimed at a specific audience and the games were aimed at a specific audience. Nintendo succeeded and grabbed the audience they wanted, the problem is that the other companies were marketing to the other audience and they grabbed all of them up.
When these two audiences cross paths, they rarely every connect. You don't see Cabela selling well on the PS3/360, you don't see dancing games selling well on the PS3/360, you don't see Ben 10 games selling well on the PS3/360, hell, it took a massive marketing campaign resembling a new console launch for the 360 to try and reach the casual market and that's now disappearing. My point is that Nintendo made the Wii and aimed it at a specific type of audience, Sony/Microsoft went for the other type of audience, they all tried swapping audiences three quarters into their life cycle and it didn't work out (Move, core Wii line-up, Kinect).
The fact is, the Wii is outselling the 360 every week, despite having far less games coming out. The audience that matters to Nintendo obviously don't care that a 'core' or what we would describe as 'good' games have been coming out. I'm sure they are all extremely happy with their Just Dances, Zumba Fitnesses, Wii Sports and Mario Karts and as long as the vast majority are happy, then the small minority in the Wii audience are going to be ignored.
I went on a bit of a rant and I hope I made my point clear. The whining made sense two years ago, but it's far too late into this generation to hope for any substantial change. Nintendo are learning with the 3DS, they realise that they made a little mistake and now they are trying to appeal to both audiences simultaneously, while also pulling for third party support. It makes me hopeful for the Wii2.
You can ignore the post if you want, I kind of regret writing it up, but I've spent too much time on it and it'd be a waste if I just deleted it.
Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.
