This has happened before, it never worked out. Nintendo are most likely smarter than the companies of the past, but it's not likey they haven't tried and failed with the Expansion Pack and the Nintendo 64DD. It's a great idea, but the market rarely ever wants their current products expanded, they'd rather buy a new model every few years instead, mainly because they don't care about the long term ramifications of their purchases.

...Wait, in the source article they speak about declaration that Cammie Dunaway did this year in february ? She leaved Nintendo on October 2010!
