Forums - Gaming - games you consider to be "art"

I don't believe in the exclusion of craft when it comes to art. There is just as much art inherent in a lovingly crafted chair as in a painting; this I hold to be true.

That said

The original Super Mario Bros. is probably the best example of art in the industry. It's not the only one, to be sure, but it's probably the poster child for craft as art.

ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, MGS4, Uncharted 2, Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, Heavy Rain, Gears of War(the first one, the second one wasn't really art, but for some reason I still enjoyed it more), God of War III, Crysis (dull but extremely realistic art)

I wish I could name some more, really all games that draw you in and you feel an emoitional attachment to are what I consider art. You can think whatever you want, but I believe that all games have the potential to be art and many live up to those standards.

It's not abstract, but a 1000 times Persona 3 FES. The atmosphere in that game can't ever be redone.

You sir, win.

I would also add Eternal Sonata.

Me? Nah ;)

P3FES wins, by a landslide.

My definition of art is broad and refers to any cultural object that speaks about a specific cultural context of creation and that can be "read" (sorry, not native) in lots of interpretations, determined once again for the subjectivity of the "reader" or art "receptor". Therefore, RPGs as a genre are definitely art but if you push my definition to the limits, every single game is art.

Now, I know people use a diferent dictionary, one that specifies that art can not be entertainment. I lol from your definition. Really hard. And I want to state that I think a life in which art and entertainment cannot go together is a life without magic. Pity you.

Space invaders infinity gene ('10), Flower ('09), Pixeljunk Eden ('08), Okami ('06), Sotc ('05), Windwaker ('03), Ico ('01), Grim Fandango ('98), The Neverhood ('96), Dune ('92)

It's hard to define why, but that's the way it is with art. They are getting more frequent for me, so I'm happy.

whoever uses the second definition that art can not be entertainment is, please excuse my language, a fucking idiot.  i just cant grasp how anyone could think that.  do we not pursue art for our own entertainment?  that definition just seems to contradict itself in so many ways.  sorry for that rant but that just blows my mind.  getting to your first big though, i do agree that rpgs as a genre are definitely art.  they are my favorite genre because of that art.

Flower is the top one that comes to mind.  It is hard to describe what that is, outside of being a form of interactive artistic expression that looks to tell a story, without a word, through you user interaction with it.  I did play through a number of the levels early, so I presume the entire game is how it is in the earlier levels.

I am sure I forget others though.  I do believe game design in the realm of creating art though.
