Forums - Gaming - Polygon Count: Which games characters have the most?

I am learning WebGL which is the Web verison of Opengl (competitior to DirectX)  and its interesting that GPU's can only produce triangles. hence Polygons are just triangles.

You can delete a segment of the traingle to create a square though lol, a pain in the ass it is to do so though lol

THe poly count is what is used to just add in extra detail by shaping the character models. The more you have, the more detail you are able to sculp in. However, i can make a square have 30 million polygons but it wouldn't matter. Because i just didn't utilize the polygons at all. I just left them there. I would know, i took entry level character modeling class and what matters is how you use the polygons. Just having a lot doesn't matter much.

Man, a square is one polygon.

Even if you mean a cube - if you make a cube with 30 million polygons then you failed to make a cube.

polygon count doesn't that much when it comes to graphics, just so everyone knows.

for most games it goes textures - polycount - effects

tho some game rely more heavaly on different areas and effects are becoming more important

But to say poly counts don't matter much is wrong

wait how would a squere have 30 million polygons? it would only have 6

But yes a low poly model can look better than a high poly one but polycounts are still important

you can add more and more. Thats how most all character models start out with, as a box. And then you add polys and expand. You are thinking of segments, polygons are smaller than the sides of a box.

I suppose it is just subjective then, the lower the poly count, the better though. The less prone the character will be to glitches and the smaller the model is the better obviously (talking about bits). Its all about effeciency and how much you can pump out of each polygon.

You can keep adding polygons to the cube, it would be retarded yeah but i was just using that to make a point. And yeah i mean't a cube/box lol, im just trying to make a point that its more about effeciency when it comes to modeling.

Crap.  You need more poly's to get the full effects from your normal/displacement maps created from the high res models.

yeah, i know its only a small slice in the pie of what makes great games look great, but i thought it would be intersting to find out how many polygons some protagonist are

Pokémon has plenty of polygon.

Lara Croft was in the Guiness book of World Records for having the highest polygon count.

I'm very interested in finding out exactly how many poly's Halo Reach characters have, cause from everything I've heard its fairly high.  I know that BUngie claims that the Assalt Rifle alone in Halo Reach has more Poly's than an entire Marine did in Halo 3.

Though I have a feeling Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 have the most.

when was that?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
