i would assume its something that will be used on their next gen console also. they need a better disk format and it would hurt them quite a bit to have to pay sony bluray royalties. seems like they want to start using proprietary disks like nintendo has been.

i can see why they dont want to bite the bullet and pay royalties, but it'll be difficult to be the center of the living room if you cant play movies and bluray is where movies are headed.

oh for pity sake... not this again!!

what? lol

Does seem a little late in the consoles life cycle to be doing somthing this expensive just for a few extra gig storage.

The old....

Sony owns blu-ray bull.

I know you havent been here that long but it took a while to stop this myth popping up all the time.

Sony is a part of the blu-ray consortium and so receives a portion of the royalties along with a lot of other companies.

ya i know this lol, it was made by like 9 or 10 companies, but that doesnt change that sony could outprice microsoft on one of the more expensive components.

right now microsoft is using sony developed (in part i think it was two or three companies altogether) dvds, but they can still outprice sony in the optical department because its old, cheap tech. bluray is not old or cheap.

if microsoft doesnt create a proprietary disc format theyre gonna be at a loss next gen. or do you have reason to believe otherwise?

a firmware upgrade...?

pretty much free.

While obviously there would be costs associated with this, your point is taken, this would be a low-cost upgrade.

So I'm not sure why Xenostar thinks this would be expensive.

well maybe like CD-ROM->GD-ROM thing is coming

i think theyre talking about development cost for microsoft, not the cost to the end user.

it really depends on what their goals were, what transfer rate were they aiming for and are they limited to the standard dvd drives 650nm laser? how much storage did they want?

we really cant know what the development cost is at with what we know

The Dreamcast GD-ROM is physically different from usual CD drives... (being the reason why it can read the GDROM's, and your PC or any PC can't) but this will be interesting to see anyway. Hopefully it deals with security, it's high time piracy got the curb.

do you know how much the blu-ray royalty is these days?

btw the biggest royalty on DVD's went to Philips.

no lol, but they rely on high number of individual sales, how much software has xbox sold so far? 400 million units? if they had to give 1 cent away for every game sold it would be 4 million $ lost just on software, the hardware would be able to at least double that as liceneses for hardware are generally more expensive (not to mention lower cost production)

every console maker has stakes in the disc format that theyre using except for microsoft. nintendo has always used proprietary tech for their media and sony has always been part of development for the media they used. microsoft wants to join them, dont you think?

Well clearly anything they are doing is limited to the current 360 hardware. So we are only talking software development.

not necessarily... they could be developing a new way to layer discs or a new disc altogether
