Forums - Gaming - My Crysis 2 impressions

As I get further in the game the more I realize it has major flaws in the aliens attacking. you can back up to certain points were they will not pass and then you can easily pick them off from a distance. I find this weak as you only have to remember how certain enemies react if you die and run around until you find the point they cannot cross. WEAK shit.  only exploit these because I am playing on hard mode the first time through.

Still enjoying the game, but as I said in other threads it has some flaws.

Thanks for the impressions.  I'm going to be buying it this week, I just don't know for what system. :P

I did two full playthroughs and collected all of the SP trophies. MP is not my thing, so I am not commenting on that.

I think the game is good, but for it to be great then the suits resources would needed to have been fundamentaly integrated into the gameplay. It's nice to have the suits options but they aren't necessarily critical to your success.

The story features two compelling charcters and a few over the top, out of context assholes, and is largely nonsensical. The stuff directly involoving the suit and Prophet is great.

The sandbox level designs are nice yet shallow; you don't have to walk straight forward to shoot someone, but ultimately the areas aren't large enough to create a truly dynamic gaming experience. There are no rewards for exploring, you still start at point A and walk to point B.

Graphically it's good. The stand out is the lighting; it is excellent. I like this better than anything that has been produced using UE3. But drawing straight lines on buildings is hardly representative of how good an engine is.

And the suit, for how impressive it looks and all if its features, it's kinda wimpy. If you watch the opening sequences, you are absolutely crushing fools, and then you play the game, you have to wonder if maybe your suit is a defect.

That being said, it is a fun FPS, set in a world filled with great lighting. I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre. 8.5/10

I wouldn't be surprised if this gets GOTY nominations.

I would expect the AI to be a little bit better than you explained. That's quite disappointing.

Good read.

Last night I completed the level mention in the OP, which is the level where it is raining.

I ran into a large amount of Ceph (Name of aliens), which in this case was about 10-15 or so and they are pretty damn stupid. I shot one in the shoulder and he didn't move, so I shot him again easily and he died.

Like I said, don't go into this game expected good AI because the AI in this game is pretty horrendous to be honest and I am playing on the 2nd highest difficulty setting. Should have just gone for the highest.

I'm not sure if any of them have, but if any reviews praise this game on AI then the parent companies need to do us consumers a favor and euthanize who ever wrote the review.

Dude, it does not get better on the third highest difficulty, yeah it is harder, but they still are constantly running into walls or doing nothing. They get stuck when you back up past a certain point on the map. I still think the bugs are there it is just the enemies hurt you more when they actually shoot you. You still have a ways to go I hate the ceph it was funner being a sniper preditor against just the soldiers.

Alright, so far I have reached the level where it is raining. People who have played the game know where I am. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who has yet to play this absolutely fantastic game.

I wasn't going to write anything yet but I am drunk, so I figure this is the point where I would probably be most honest.

Graphics

They are fantastic, however sometimes they could look rather underwhelming, like the level where you meet this guy (Won't say his name) and you are in an apartment building. It look pretty bad compared to the rest of what I have seen. I wonder if it is the superb lighting that makes it looks as great as it does.

I am still undecided on whether or not it is the best I have experienced on consoles. Uncharted 2 looked great as did Killzone 3, however the areas in Crysis 2 are soooo much larger, yet the game looks almost as good as Killzone 3, let me explain a little bit.

Killzone 3 is very action heavy and from what I have experienced thus far (Trophies give me the impression that I am about 50% through, this game is pretty long), Crysis 2 isn't. Could however be because I play more of a stealthy style. Some say that Crysis 2 has more going on in the background but so far I just don't see it, so I need to take that into account.

You will walk across streets and rooftops, see puddles of water on the ground that look great but they seem to only be textures because walking through them has no effect, neither does firing bullets. No ripples, not a thing. Some things in this game seem to be a mixed bag.

I honestly think that ranking something as a king of graphics is stupid when comparing the two so I really won't go too far into it, however if you want my opinion on which game I think looks better and which game I prefer overall, I would say Killzone 3. However, both game look superb and your opinion will easily differ based on whether you prefer realistic or fictional. Both games are awesome and Crysis 2 shows that Crytek did an awesome job when it comes to visuals.

By the way, the lighting is phenominal.

Artificial Intelligence

The enemies can be tough, but it is not really because they are smart but rather because they take quite a few bullets to take down. I have had times where I was walking through a building and many enemies just stood still and didn't move, they really did nothing at all, I could just walk up to each one and just melee them without them even firing a single bullet. I also had times where I would fire a bullet and they would run away only to hit a wall and keep on trying to run, just waiting for me to kill them.

The AI in this game has some issues. The last level I played is a good example.

I started on a rootop and had to find a way into a building on the ground level, there were plenty on enemies there and I was sniping them one by one and there was also a helicopter flying around. I would shoot an enemy and then hide. The enemies made almost no attempts to flank me, they would just duck behind cover for a moment and then continue strolling around, as if I never shot down their comrades. I would then take down another, hide, rinse and repeat until I cleared the area.

You can also run up to a group, shoot a few of them, aggro them and then run back, go into cloak and after a few moments they would go on about their business as usual.

If you are looking for top notch AI, Crysis 2 as far as I have experienced, is not the game you are looking for.

Glitches and other noticable issues

While these aren't gamebreakers in my opinion I still feel they warrant a mention.

I have experienced a wide variety of glitches ranging from enemies stuck in walls, enemies stuck knee deep into the ground, floating enemies, enemies who just stand around and do nothing even if you get in their face, enemies running in place, pop in and also if you look down and run sometimes you will see your character's legs not even move while he just floats around. I have also noticed things like blood on the ground that floats and changes position as you move.

The game is clearly unpolished.

Gameplay

To me this is the most important aspect of a game and quite honestly, this is where I feel Crysis shines. The game is fun, there is no way around it. I have been having so much fun with this title that I feel there is no need to go into a big explanation on why or anything else.

To put it simply, the game gives you many options. It allows you to customize weapons, customize you suit, etc... You get to customize and play the game the way you want to play it. You could easily play the game twice or more and the experience would never be exactly the same.

Yes the game has it's glitches and sometimes the graphics can be great or dull, however the fun factor doesn't suffer and to be quite honest the glitches don't happen all the time, nor do they really hurt your experience.

I would write more but right about now I feel like I am ready to pass out. I will post more of my opinion as I advance in the game if anyone is interested.

If anyone is on the fence about the game I would say to get it. The single player mode so far seems to be really long, I can see myself taking at least 10-15 hours minimum to complete based on how I play it. The framerate is not issue at all, I haven't noticed any big frame drops thus far to be completely honest.

All in all, the game has it's moments, whether they be good or bad, but the fun factor is high. Crytek has delivered an FPS title that plays different from any other that I have thus far experienced this generation and give them a big thumbs up.

I'm only at the beginning of the game but so far it's a let down for me.

On PS3 :

Graphics are good but nowhere near the best on this console : I really don't know why people fell excited about them. There's too much aliasing and i don't like this blur effect when you rotate.

Animations are simplistic and  your player behaves like he's floating above the ground when moving. Each time you cease a rotation, Alcatraz mark a perfect stop, just like if he was a robot. For me this kills the immersion.

AI...well it didn't impress me. Too much...artificial. The enemy reactions feel "binary"

Sound and music are really good.

Don't know what to expect next but I hopeit will get better.

Is the AI any better on pc? Was it turned down a notch with the graphics to fit on console?

Maybe the engine doesn't have time to update all enemies all the time. More likely it is just bad coding though. Has anyone played both pc and console version and noticed any difference in enemy behaviour?

Anyway smart AI would not work. If the AI would coordinate their efforts and not give up pursuit you would never stand a chance against 15 or more enemies.

I cannot recall a time there was more than 10 AI on the screen at once and they were all spread out over big areas. This game has some bigger areas than many shooters. Most of the time there are about 5 enemies or less.

I think one of the funniest things in this game is where I find myself a nice sniping spot, aim my sight at an unsuspecting enemy, fire a bullet into his skull and witness something that goes like this :

"Huh, what was that?"

"Enemy Fire!"

They start looking around and running in a wide open area, right around the area of their dead comrade and then realize that they can not find me.

Then I usually hear this :

"Nope, false alarm"

LMFAO, your comrade is on the ground with a bullet wound to the skull. "False alarm" my ass.
