Forums - Sales - Games industry wins tax relief in the new UK budget!

Today the parlament met to decied important things such as fuel duty (which fell by 1p!) and a new budget plan for the British economy. This included tax decisions, etc etc. What no-one expected was a lovely kiss on the cheek for the games industry with a tax reduction that allows the British games industry to keep £7,000,000 that before would have gone to tax. if you wish to find out more the link is as follows.

Woo! Good news!

"It will mean studios can invest more in research and development, as well as hiring additional staff."

So it means a possible rise in quality from Lionhead, Rare, MM, Rockstar, Criterion and Codemasters?

Good for non Uk gamers =p.

This is very good news indeed.

I would like to thank the UK members for giving us this so we can get great games and they have to work untill like they are 70 years old or they get cut with their schoolbudget or healthcare.. :)

For somebody trying to simplify the tax code, he added a hell of a lot of tax breaks.

It's shame that MM are really the only U.K developer nowadays.  I used to love Rare years ago, but not now

7 million pounds is a drop in the bucket as to what developers and publishers based in the UK will make. It will not rectify the larger tax issues that the UK has which prevents developers from staying there. It may help the brain drain slightly, but since there are much better places in the world to do business, its unlikely this will help.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Although I'm not going into game development, I'm certainly leaving the UK as soon as physically possible to go out and work in the Silicon Valley. It's not just the taxes, though, it's everything - general culture, weather, finances (I know that California's finances are not exactly rosey, but it's like diving into a barrel of tits compared to the UK's). On some levels, the UK will just never be able to compete.
