Forums - General - Americans easily freaked out?

People who are freaking out about radiation seem to forget that American dropped two atomic-fucking-bombs on Japan 65 years ago and the west coast was just fine afterward.

China is pretty much doing the same buying up salt.

Between swine flu, bird flu, SARS, and countless other paper-tigers built by the media is anyone surprised that the mainstream media continues to play on people's fears for ratings anymore?

Have you ever done any kind of research at all on pandemics? Or even just thought about it much? Pandemics are scary scary things. The problem isn't necessarily the current form of the pandemic, but rather the possibility of mutation over time that will make it even more resilient, invisible, and fatal.

The 1918 Spanish Flu is estimated to have killed 50-100 million people. The second wave was the truly deadly one.

"A large factor in the worldwide occurrence of this flu was increased travel. Modern transportation systems made it easier for soldiers, sailors, and civilian travelers to spread the disease."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu

Pandemics can be quite serious, which is why governments and health organizations freak out and may go overboard for even 'lesser' diseases. Frankly, I'm all for that. It will keep more people healthy and alive. The only way to fight against a pandemic is with fast, serious action.

As for the radiation thing, yeah, people are freaking out. It is a little silly, but hey, if these people only need to buy something for some peace of mind, I say go for it.

No one that I have talked to since the events have been freaked out at all. 0% of every single person I know have been affected. The media is probably just taking it too far, along with a very minor majority. I hardly watch the news anyway.

Someone else recently made a thread about how American Media is so worried about radiation reaching North America and how American's are freaking out. Alittle Dejavu, too lazy to actually find the thread but it was fairly recent.

I find it sort of funny, but the case in which the media is pushing it. I live In BC and Vancouver is the closest your gonna get to the radiation in Canada and our media isn't really freaking out. Infact the media said Iodine pills were selling out but had a nuclear expert on television to assure people that the radition leak if a major one occurs would not actually be significant in North America.

Their are paranoid people everywhere around the globe, I know it was reported on the news that around the Ontario Nuclear plant people were also buying Iodine pills as if that reactor was going to blow. After 9/11 people freaked that Vancouver would get suicide bombed or a plane fly into it.

People freak out when given a chance and logic doesn't seem to stop them. Its very easy to scare a population. Look at Y2K Microsoft and others re-assured everyone nothing was going to happen, the Governments of the world said nothing was going to happen. Yet tons of people hid in bomb shelters and storm cellars expecting the world to end.

People are idiots just take this 2012 thing, scientists and archeologists are all saying now that they were wrong and the actual calendar ended already. The day in 2012 is the wrong date the calendar is already over. Yet thousands of moron's believe the world is going to end in 2012. (Mods - Please don't ban me for calling them morons)

Fact is people always have to be scared of something, even if everything was going perfect they would find something to freak out about. Its human nature to get freaked out!

those who live or work near the plants are SUPPOSED to have them already.  public places (like schools, for example) already keep stockpiles to give to all the people at them.  they give them out free at pharmacies to people who live in the areas around the plant.   but most people will generally be indifferent to what they are supposed to do...for it to encourage them to do something they already should have is not paranoia.

oh, by the way, last friday when i went to my favorite Kebap-Stand, the guy next to me kept talking about how he is not gonna buy a Toyota, because they are radioactive now... @___@

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Its all the medias fought. If they put out that ipads have a high chance of causing cancer (2%lol) you will see apple run out of business lol

...I still don't get why people are buying salt like crazy though.

Also, I'm assuming this is a California or West coast thing because I haven't heard anything about it.  I saw a few spots on the news during commericals mention radiation a few days after the quake, but haven't seen anything since then.

It's called a self-fulfilling prophecy. Someone says: "There are gonna be salt shortages. You won't be able to find salt anywhere!!!"

Hearing this, all the people go out like crazy and buy all the salt they can get their hands on. And then BAM! no more salt anywhere. You Americans did a similar thing with toilet paper sometime in the first half of the previous century.

well most of us, the American media loves to overexaggerated everything(swine flu anyone?) as I live in the northeast so I not really paying attention to the potential of radiation coming to america(well atleast my area)

the only thing that's kinda pissing my off is the media(well atleast some of them) are making it seem that nuclear energy/power plant is some vile evil, though nuclear does have it faults(mainly the way of dumping and containing of nuclear waste) but it provides a substantial amount of electricity here in the northeast part of america.

now everyone thinks that there nuclear powerplant going to blow without taking in to consideration that the fukashima powerplant was hit by the 5th largest earthquake ever recorded and then followed by a huge tsunami, I mean come on, shit like that doesn't happen everyday.(no offense to anyone) Though I do belive america should look into the their power plants structure to atleast prevent or be prepared for something of this magnitude.

Is this like Canadians being afraid of the dark? (Heard it from How I Met Your Mother must be true right??)
