Forums - Nintendo - VGC/gamrConnect Nintendo 3DS Discussion Thread

Hello, it's me, allaboutthegames885, seizing a rare opportunity to fill a void on these forums: a centralized discussion thread on all things related to Nintendo's newest handheld, the 3DS! Here, you can discuss anything from the features of this new handheld, to the games that will be released for it, as well as any news you are able to dig up concerning topics directly related to the 3DS.

Here are the rules:

  • No spamming, flaming, or trolling (or feeding into it; you don't need to be disrespectful to the actual trolls that populate my twisted imagination; just kidding, or am I?).
  • No comparisons or even mentions of the NGP, iPhone, Droid, EVO, or Windows Mobile Phone families of products (and if there's any possible competitor that I didn't mention, don't talk about them either).
  • Otherwise, have fun, and try to censor yourself if you can.

So let's get things moving with a mini-topic: What is your favorite feature of the 3DS?

I'll start: My favorite feature of the 3DS is the pedometer. I am one of those stereotypical gamers that lives with his mom and is incredibly fat (it's true, if I could post a picture of myself on these forums, you'd see that quite plainly). I tend not to go outside without a worthwhile reason to do so. Combine that with my American Diet (heavy quantities of fatty, carbohydrate-loaded, high-calorie foods), and you get the picture. The pedometer feature counts your steps and rewards your efforts with currency to buy specially made DLC for participating games. I believe I'd probably walk more if I felt I was getting something out of it... And while I could be achieving a similar benefit with my Pokewalker, the benefits of that are very limited and require intensive use. Working towards catching two Pokemon and 3 items at a time is one thing, but if I can actually get paid in virtual money for something I need to do more of anyway, that would be stellar!

I am most excited for StreetPass. I go to a school of 1800 people and it will be interesting to see who the other nerds are. :P

I'm also looking forward to music, 3D pictures, AR games, and of course software.

I'm really intersted in all of it, but at the start, the 3D effect and the AR games have me the most intrigued. At worst, the 3DS will be an upgrade to the DS in just about everything, so I don't see anything not to like about.

LISTEN TO THE FIRST WORLD PODCAST REAL GAMERS, REAL AWESOME

Yeah waiting for my 3ds, I preorder over a month ago now, it is been a long wait but I know I not going to be dissapointed... Also the only game I have for now (Paid for) is SSFIV, face raiders, street pass  and Ar games should do it until zelda come out. Can wait for E3, tons of new games for sure...

Oh noes: this thread has gone cold! Ok, I'm changing the mini-topic: General Discussion: What are your reactions to the Nintendo 3DS?

I'll start: I think this is going to be a game-changer. Just think of all the things you can do when this handheld is in Sleep Mode! StreetPass, SpotPass, content coming in, content going out, it's all so wonderful. Dare I even mention the 3d gaming without the need for bulky 3d glasses? This is going to be insane!

Don't really care about 3D, glassless or not.

The only game I want in the launch lineup is SSFIV: 3D Edition. (Not that it matters. I won't be getting one at launch anyway.) And my favorite feature will probably end up being the Virtual Console. Not especially interested in StreetPass, SpotPass, or any o' that jazz.

Party pooper, signing out.

Got to try out the 3DS at Best Buy today.

I tried Pilotwings Resort, Face Raider, Mii maker camera, and toggled around ith the options.

The system itself works. The 3D adds new dimension that I absoloutly love. There is a focus spot, but even with the wires limiting the system movement, it wasn't hard at all to find the "sweet sptot" and stick with it. And if you were wondering, no eye issues. This is from a person who's head will throb after a 3D movie and has 20-50 vision.

Pilotwings Resort is a great showcase in the sense of the enviornment and how well the 3D works. The overall feeling as very positive and carefree. The 3D worked best for me at the halfway point for this game, but it varies. That said, I'm glad I played it because although I was planning on buying it and it was fun, it seemed more like a showcase and not my type of game, so I'm glad I'm saving $40.

Face Raider was really fun as well. My picture became my enemy as I had to move the 3DS around and shoot myself as the scenery around me was falling apart. I would've had more fun if the wires allowed more movement then 15 degrees from center.

Mii Maker with the camera works too well. By that I mean I looked ugly, and it made my self-esteem drop a little. There was slight toggling you could do before and after to make it look presentable, but it was fun to do anyway. 3D works here, too.

Options are all at the top and messing around with it I found great flexibility with the various options, including brightness, menu, and others.

Overall, the system itself does what it promises, but nothing more. Which is a good thing by all means, but it still should be the software that makes a person buy this.

So let's get things moving with a mini-topic: What is your favorite feature of the 3DS?

That you can turn off the 3D

I am intested in the VC too. Bit weary of it though.

Ok, I'm changing the mini-topicGeneral Discussion: What are your reactions to the Nintendo 3DS?

Still thankfull I can turn off the 3D. Well, I have said it in another post, but I must say my interest in it is not that high. Being I own every Nintendo console home or handheld, thats not good for Ninty. My reasons.

Price- $250 is too much for a handheld imo. It doesnt help that  things such as the 3D which is probably a good size of the increase in price isnt that big of a deal to me, or really at all.

Games- Well, I am interested in couple of them. Such as Kid Icarus-I alo enjoy Ridge Racer games-Steel Driver looks pretty neat too. However, not one of these games is going to make it a must have for me. Theres some other games they have mentioned like Final Fantasy-2D Mario-Mario Kart-Paper Mario, Animal Crossing. etc but they are not here yet and god knows when they will be, or how long it will be before enough of them are out to finally get me to buy one. The DS and WIi are full of my kind of games.

Direction- I have not a clue what direction Ninty is taken with this console. So far, it seems more like a N64/Gamecube type of system in high tech and game direction.  I do own both those systems. However, I never played them near as much as my others. I dont plan to buy another system like them at least at the $250 price tag.

All in all the system is a wait and see. The DS and Wii had plenty of games I enjoyed a lot, so I am hopefull. But, im not investing until I see that hope as a reality. Note I did not buy a Wii or DS until the 2nd-3rd year of them being out.

I think ultimately, the thing about the 3DS from which I will draw the most enjoyment will be the inevitable gigantic commercial success of the device. Nothing is more satisfying than the knowledge that the gaming console you are a fan of of is dominating its respective market. It is why I love this site so much more than other gaming related sites; it affirms that all of my favourite gaming consoles have commercially dominated their respective generations of gaming.
