Forums - Microsoft - Epic: Gears Maria Scene Made Players Cry

Cry from laughter maybe.

I actually don't know anyone that took scene seriously.

-edit-

And don't get me wrong, it was a sad situation but it was just so over-the-top.  It was like the difference between some campy B-Movie trying to do a serious scene and some actual good director with good actor's trying to do a serious scene.

Never played the game, but I did just watch the clip on Youtube out of curiosity.  And I think your description of it is spot on.

Definitely didn't cry, was a bit like "Oh snap." but not really like "Whyyyyyyyyyyy Maria whyyyyyy herrrr".

Please no corny.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

LOL, for me it was the exact opposite. I was cheering because now that she was dead, we could finally let all that Maria crap behind. Normally I'm all up for putting moving stories into games, but this just felt so horribly out of place, you just wanted it to end.

It felt contrived; a deliberate effort to show that Gears is more than just Guns n' Guts, but it really didn't make much sense to make a potential suicide mission detour considering the millions if not tens of millions of people that undoubtedly died on Serra during the Locust attack.

Yeah, he lost his wife; it was terrible. Lots of terrible things happen throughout the story to just about everyone in the game. If it had been any other character, Dom's obessive to the point of neglecting his duty quest to find his wife, who in all probability was dead based on the sheer number of casualties, would have resulted in his death. I thought it was actually a pretty irritating sub-plot.

Rally Point Omega is a far better example of how to create emotional impact in a game. The only mind boggling thing about the ending was the fact that a lot of players were actually pissed off about the "no-win situation" ending despite the fact that everyone should have known before they even started the game that the team and the entire planet was doomed from the very first mission.

Nope, didn't shed a tear.

Above: still the best game of the year.

I almost got teary. I was really tired though because i was beating it overnight lol

I thought the scene was incredible. Were all of the events leading up to it perfect? No, but I had some friends over that watched that cutscene, and they said that it was awesome, and wanted to see me play more of the game. These friends of mine were completely uninterested in gaming. They thought the story was really good. I think the scene affected me more, because I thought about what it would be like to have to do that. Did I cry? No. But I almost did, and I'm not ashamed to say so. It's cool to chainsaw locusts, and get an awesome headshot, but its nice that a game has more to offer than that. I'm glad Epic decided to make it like they did. In fact, I think its probably the cutscene that has impacted me the most in any game.

The last time I cried at a movie/videogame was when the ant died in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and that was in 1990.  My parents, siblings, and some friends laughed at me so I hardened my heart to all sad scenes.  I just can't tear up during movies and such anymore.
