Forums - Gaming - Carmack: "PS3 Better Than Anything... Except 360"

You may want to go back and play Mass Effect 2 again on the 360.... or the PS3 or even on PC. Let me give you a clue: Not a single version has anti-aliasing; they all use clever HDR to mask the jaggies. If you want to play Mass Effect 2 with anti-aliasing then you have to manually force it on PC (the game doesn't give you the option to turn AA on).

states otherwise

even if you were correct though, that still doesn't excuse releasing a year later with the same performence, but with less effects (blur)

Also, you completely missed the point with the HDD. Reading from a HDD is much faster than any optical format and this means better streaming and less compression artifacts.

So, shouldn't all multiplatform games load faster and look better on PS3? Do they? I don't think so

Plus it wouldn't matter, RAGE is a space heavy game, the limit for PS3 forced installs is 5GB, less then your typical xbox 360 dvd.

Your comparison of PS2 and Gamecube versions of RE4 doesn't work because unlike PS2 and Gamecube (where Gamecube was far more capable and powerful), PS3 and 360 are similar in terms of power and performance.

nor does the disc space define the performance being my point, PC and 360 are still using DVD and PS3 continues to struggle for parity, let alone the significant advantages the Gamecube had...im not really seeing a reason to belive the PS3 version will be on par with those, given JCS comments

The DF link says "hints" of 2XAA. Funnily enough, when they did Mass Effect 2 on 360 and PC, they said there was no AA unless forced on PC. Either way, it doesn't show as all version show jaggies (except for some PC gamers).

Also, the HDD comment is related to an old quote from Carmack where he stated that the PS3 version would likely have less compression artifacts, although it took a lot more effort to get any parity. Plus, games should load faster on PS3 then on 360 if they're installed properly. Same way an installed 360 game should run faster then from the DVD.

ME2 on X360 and PC have AA on some of the passes it takes to create the image, but not in all. It's a limitation of the deferred rendering in UE3. In PS3 it doesn't have AA on any pass, but the difference isn't major.

For your consideration, the best-selling game (non-bundled, of course) of all time runs best on the paltry X360. From digitalfoundry:

For those with both consoles, the choice of where you spend the majority of your online gaming time must be factored into any purchasing decision - as was the case with Modern Warfare 2 before it. However, from a technical perspective, there's little doubt that the Xbox 360 offers the better experience: superior image definition, and a pleasingly smoother run of play.

In many ways, the core experience of playing a COD title is defined by that 60FPS target frame-rate and the advantages that brings. Neither version of the game sustains it, but the Xbox 360 game comes closest and thus it just feels like the more playable, satisfying game. Factor in the higher resolution and what feels like a bit more polish, and it's clearly the pick of the two HD console releases.

Pokemon of War edition?

No, it's a franchise that no matter how repetitive and lame people will keep buying.

It still runs better on the X360.

So the PS3 version of Rage will look inferior, I'm calling it!

Anyway, nothing against his opinion. I guess many developers favour one console, and there is nothing wrong with it.
Although I think he should have given a reason why he prefers the 360...

He gave it a few days ago, he prefers DirectX over anything else.

yet still develops with OpenGL.

I and many other people happen to disagree with that last sentence, but you're entitled to your opinion.

but that's .....a fact *scratches head*

"The 360 isn't superior in anyway to the PS3"

That I'm afraid is not a fact, it's just your opinion that many people will feel is wrong.  I think you need to look up the definition of fact.

not getting into this again just re read my other post.

I did read your other post it doesn't change that it's your opinion, not a fact but as you say there isn't any point covering old ground.

OpenGL is more portable than DirectX, because it's an open standard. If you want build a portable engine, you need for OpenGL.

Someone who is primarily PC developer likes 360 better then PS3.

Not exactly a surprise.

Heck, the only reason Valve changed thier tune is that Sony for some reason gave Valve permission to run Steam on the PS3.

360 is more of a traditional computer then the PS3.

This is Carmacks first next gen game. (right?)

Remember what it was like back when nobody knew how to program for the PS3?  Everyone perferred 360, and the 360 games ran better.
