The effects in The Host were really good I thought.

And I also watched it dubbed as opposed to subtitled. I'm normally quite the stickler for subtitles, but if it's a genre film, I'm ok with bad dub jobs.

I prefer the original performance to the bad dub. I can catch the words quickly enough, and like to be able to catch the tone of the performance.

As for the effects, I agree that they were well done, especially when you consider that it's not some Hollywood summer blockbuster. I can understand guys like CDiablo - odds are he grew up like me on FX by O'Brien and Harryhausen and Tippet. I once had similar resistance to CGI, but that was long ago when the field was in it's infancy. There's not debating the artistry of the original Kong or Sinbad films, but they just cannot compete with what CGI has to offer. Not only does well done CGI look more natural (stop motion always has a quirk, jerky feel to it), it can do things that would be practically impossible with stop motion, and at a much cheaper price to boot. It's simply not a coinicidence that "geek films" have started to dominate the cinemas and are slowly infiltrating the television - the tools finally exist to bring many of these stories to life (can you imagine the Silver Surfer in the pre-digital era?)

TO be honest I feel 95% of CG just looks like trash, when you see it it just looks like it isnt there. 95% of stop motion is garbage as well. Both techniques generally look good only in movies that are all CGI or all stop motion. I just cant stomach how fake spiderman looks in his movies, its LOL bad. Transformers(though the movie blew) looked great. Frikkin Jurassic Park (I know it was 1/2 CG 1/2 anamatronics) looked great and looks better than most movies that have come out after it.

Most people I know feel the same way about CG. I accept CG when it doesnt look blatently fake. I realise it is a medium to bring the "geek films" to life, but I really expected big things from CG during the Terminator 2 days and it seems few movies have moved past that level of CG immersion. Of course this is one mans opinion, and clearly not that of the masses(:see box office recipts) .

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

CGI is fine as long as the directors acknowledge that the technology isn't perfect yet. The main problem with a lot of CGI movies is that it gives this false sense of no limitations. The best CGI based movies work within the limitations they have.

Movies like Starship Troopers, Jurrasic Park and Terminator 2 all combined the best special effects of the time with plenty of other neat little tricks and older technologies. The pace scenes in Starship troopers used special effects imposed over actual models for the ships. Jurrasic park jumped between CGI and animatronics, and Terminator 2 used all kinds of different techniques for their effects. And these sorts of movies effects hold up tremendously well, while films like the Starwars Prequels looked like trash from day one because complete and utter trust was put in the power of CGI.

The Host really suprised me with how well the CGI monster interacted with the real environment. Especially in the crowd scenes.

I think this would be a perfect time to mention Legolas in the Lord of The Rings movies, lol. Or how about the Yoda vs Sidious battle near the end of Revenge of The Sith?

I agree and find it annoying when CGI and such is used a little too much and I think it kills the intended effect. The Spiderman movies are a really good example, especially with how many times you can clearly see that it's CGI. Revenge of the Sith is a VERY good example too with the Yoda vs Sidious battle. I almost crack up laughing when I see it because it goes from close ups of Sidious where it's the actor playing the part and he moves slowly to CGI when the camera is farther back and he's moving MUCH faster. *edit* not to mention it's akward (for my eyes at least) to see the actors in the CGI backgrounds for most of the movie.
