We're getting spam in posts quite often for a while and mods aren't always around to lay down the banhammer.

Would it be possible to give regular users the ability to ban new accounts?

For example, anyone's been around for a year has the ability to ban any new account that's created recently.

This will be monitored of course to avoid abuses. If the user abuse the ban power, the user himself will be banned.

That way, the mods don't have to do as much work.

How about more mods?? there's only 13 mods on the site and 3 havent been online like a month or more.

Well I would expect Naz or ioi will take care of that soon enough if they feel its needed.  There may be good reasons why the few havent been on in a while

Though this is a bit too much power, I think that anybody a year or longer on this site should have combined power similar to this. For example, if 4 or 5 people vote to ban something, like a spammer, and they're all 'veteran' accounts, then something to that extent should work.

Also, is IP banning the spammers plausible? Or have no effect at all?

Yes it is possible and I would imagine is normally done,  but lets leave that to the Admins/Mods.  I dont want any regular users with any kind of power like that
