Forums - Nintendo - *3DS__What Are 3D Pictures?*

I am sorry but I am confused...again LOL.

I just found out that the 3DS can take 3D Pictures...what is that? What do they mean by taking 3D pictures?

Can you take 3D video too?(If thats possible)

3D pictures use a format called MPO (multi picture object) based in the standard JPEG format

don't mistake 3D as in polygons (2D/3D) which was the big gaming inovation of the 90ies and the new 3D tech which is just a visual trick to make you think you see actual depth. The visual trick is the recent 3D and that is the 3D refered to in 3DS.

Basically both your eyes see a different picture of the same thing but with a different angle... as in real life. If you take a sheet of paper and put it with the edge in front of your noze, you will see one side of the paper with each eye, but not the same side... Technically, the new 3D reflects this binocular vision and that is what gives you the sensation of depth.

Can you give me an example...

I know that the 3DS has 3D like in the movie theaters but without glasses and with different tech. You see the 3D in 3DS like in 3D movies when you play games and watch movies on 3DS. But...

What will it be like when taking a picture? For Example: If I take a picture of somebody kicking with a normal camera it becomes blurry and you can't really see it. Will the 3DS make the picture clear with the person's foot coming through the 3D screen a bit or no? If not, please give an example.

Imagine a 3DS game paused.  That's a 3D picture.

Yes it has been confirmed that you will be able to record 3D videos but it will come at a later date in an update.

What you talk about there is not 3D, it's sutter speed. Blurryness can come from focus or from movement. If you have a very high sutter speed, the movement taken in the picture will be much smaller time frame and so you won't have the blurry leg.

The 3DS is definitely not a camera to take sports pictures. The 3DS is to take a familly picture or a picture of your dog. If you want an example, immagine a theater show, you have the characters in front (slightly) and the background that looks flatter but it may have different layers, yet the real depth you see is based on the characters up front. don't expect much more than this from the 3DS.

Keep in mind that the 3D effect is only really visible for close objects. Your eyes are just barely appart from each other and the 3DS cameras emulate this. Games will increase the sense of depth by cheating (characters are not life size so a 30 cm depth at their scale is like 30M, basically you're playing with your noze 10cm away from you little toy army men) but in real life if you see a building down the street, you see it in 2D. When you take a picture or a video with the 3DS, you won't be 10cm from your target, if your on the sidelines filming a soccer game, you definitely won't see better 3D than what you see in real life, which means in picture it'll look flat. However, if you take a picture of your Warhamer painted jurgaunaut from 10 cm away, then there, yes you'll have a great 3D effect.

I hope that was somewhat clear. It's not specific to the 3DS, i don't know its specs, but these comments are specific to any 3D device, don't expect more than what your eyes can see.

Think of it as FPS game. Now, add dept to it. In such, that, you can visually tell how far or close the objects are.
