Forums - Sales - *How Much Longer Will Nintendo Lead The Markets?*

Too early to say yet. Definitely too early to be saying anything about the 3DS. The hardware sold very well for a launch, even if it wasn't an instant sell out, but the units of games sold during the same period were not quite as impressive (someone else can look it up but I think it was less than the number of hardware units sold). Ultimately, the mark of the 3DS' success will be in its ability to move software units.

Regarding Nintendo's next gen Wii successor; it's definitely too early to be prematurely calling another hit out of the ballpark. Lighting rarely strikes twice and Nintendo will have to come up with something special that captures the expanded audience once again enough to convince them that they need to replace their Wii.

As far as this generation goes, sure the Wii will close with the greatest number of units sold, but its marketshare on a month to month basis has done nothing but erode and there will be no rabbits pulled out of Nintendo's hat to reverse this trend.

The DS on the other hand, will likely go down as the best selling dedicated handheld gaming system of all time, if for no reason other than that the extended future of such devices is legitimately in question with the continued growth of iOS and Android mobile gaming.

Around the Network

On the 3DS topic,

I am not sure if Nintnedo messed up the launch yet or not. Only time will tell. I would have liked to see a million units on shelves in Japan day 1. They really need to show developers that their is enough of a market their for them to commit to real AAA games before the NGP launches. Only reason I saw that is because WE ALL KNOW NGP will be better managed then PSP. So I really feel that even though Nintendo will probably win hardware sales. 3rd party software needs to come onboard, and not just shovelware and casual games. So far the 3DS is definetly looking stronger then DS, but they need to sustain that for a good 3-4years of AAA titles.

I wonder if Micrososft will ever launch that Halo game they had runnign on the old DS haha. WIth a few upgrades etc.. it could be their way to combat SONY from another angle by supporting NIntendo's handheld (assuming they don't make their own).

According to the rule Nintendo has one more generation before they lose leadership.

What needs to be watched is the 3DS performance, that's really what will determine whether or not Nintendo stays on top and to what level. If 3DS does great you can expect a great new generation from Nintendo.
