Forums - Gaming - Epic Games 'Would Love' to Put Gears of War on PS3

Industrygamers

The Gears of War franchise will receive its much anticipated third installment later this fall, and Epic Games is expecting it to be the "entertainment event of 2011," but that's an event that PS3 owners won't be able to participate in. The exclusive partnership with Microsoft for the Gearstrilogy has definitely been a beneficial one for Epic, but we asked Epic President Mike Capps during GDC if he'd like to be able to put Gears on Sony's platform to perhaps increase sales even more.

"Do we wish we could take all those Killzone [players] and Resistance fans on PS3, and get them to say 'Gears is awesome'? Yeah, sure I'd love to ship the Gears trilogy on PlayStation. That would be fun. I want to be there; I want to be everywhere," he said.

Even so, Capps acknowledges that Microsoft has been immensely helpful to Epic with the Gearsfranchise. "I don't regret what we're doing with Microsoft. They make it worthwhile all the time," he said.

Capps explained how the deal first started with Microsoft: "I think we were very eyes open... there was no Xbox 360 (it was called something else) and we were guessing they'd be more successful than they were in the previous gen... And we thought they had a real plan for something successful. For us, we were pitching a story-based game; we were just the 'Unreal studio' right? So we were both taking a risk, and it paid off in a huge way for Gears.  The amount of support they put behind Gears... it was really to launch their platform, to show what Xbox 360 could do - the whole HD experience with Samsung. I think we really delivered that. So we continue to get love from Microsoft in a way that I don't think we could get from a publisher focused on cross-platform."

So will Gears of War ever come to PS3? Capps wouldn't say, but he did note that, "We definitely own Gears of War. This is our franchise, our IP," so the possibility is still there. However, he added, "Time and time again, when it came down to figure out what we do next with Gears, we sat down with Microsoft and they've given us really good, compelling reasons to work with them again."

"They don't just market it; they do amazing work and they have a user testing team that makes our games better, and so each time we've come to the point of 'what do we do next?' we've been happy to work with them. They help us make a better product and do some really cool marketing on the platform, so we save some money there."

Sounds like Mass Effect all over again.

Well I probably wouldn't play the online to the games since I've got plenty of other online games to play. Would the campaign be worth it?

Imagine if this is a timed exclusive.

Well, probably not.

LOL if Gears went multiplatform Microsoft would have to fold this generation.

I found the campaign to be boring in both Gears 1 and 2 but LOVED the multiplayer.

I'd be happy if they would just bring Gears 2 and 3 to pc. Hell with PS3.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

only ME2

and EPIC is not EA

I was under the impression that Gear 1 and 2 could never come to PS3, but theres a possibility Gear 3 could because Epic are not contracted with Microsoft for that one.

either way the PS3 dosent need another shooter, but Gears is more than that, on the 360 its a key exclusive so i dont think Microsoft will allow it to go multiplat.

however i think theres a possibility that after 1 year Epic will port Gears 3 alone like Mass Effect 2.

Its never going to happen.  At least not this gen.  If there are more Gears of War next gen it may come to the PS4 or whatever Sony's next gen console is called.

Though if MS really does loose yet another exclusive and as big of one as Gears of War then I will have lost all faith in them.  I mean honestly nearly every single "exclusive" game they've had this entire generation has ended up just being timed exclusives.
