still can't do flash or silverlight.

no sale for me

You'll see silverlight on iOS as soon as you see iTunes integration on WM7. iOS already has a netflix app which is the only thing of significane I can think silverlight is used on anyways.

Flash, who knows. I don't know how long Adobe can hold out when over 100 million iOS devices are being sold each year.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Flash, who knows. I don't know how long Adobe can hold out when over 100 million iOS devices are being sold each year.

HTML 5 is where embedded net video is heading and there's no question the surge of iOS devices are speeding that along.

Flash is basically a requirement for sites that choose to exclude themselves from that growing audience; probably not the best decision if traffic is the intended goal of a given site.

What may have sounded foolish ("no Flash?! I refuse to use it!") when iOS debuted is now "site doesn't work on my iOS device? I won't use it!"

"A whopping 63 percent of all videos on the Web are now HTML5-compatible, compared to only 10 percent just a year ago, according to video-sharing site Mefeedia. Instead of relying solely on Flash to display their videos, many more Web sites are adopting video formats that can run directly in HTML5-compatible browsers."

Still no Flash and; how is this in any way useful to someone who owns either a smartphone or a good laptop or, heck, someone who owns both (there are kind of a lot of people who own either or both, after all)?

It amazes me how Apple are able to convince their customers that they need such a redundant product (all consumer electronics are, strictly speaking, but this one more so than most). I'm sure they make some cool stuff but I will never understand how anyone can become so utterly entranced by products made by a company the same way that Apple fans do.

End of sour and grumpy post.

2. No more old iPad SKU? Standard Apple M.O. keeps last year's model around for a discount, but not this time. Feels like a lost opportunity to me, as I'm sure a lot of cheapskates would be willing to pay $400 US for a less capable tablet. This opens up room for competitors to sell cheap devices. Perhaps this was necessary to ensure that all component supply could keep a steady flow of iPad 2s rolling out.

The old iPad has been cut to $400 though.

That's a clearance sale. Go to Apple's online store, click on iPad, and it's all about version 2. Once those 1st gen units are gone, there aren't any more being made.

If you use this logic, you will never, ever have a tablet. Which I guess is fine if you're trying to save money, but a better model will always be a year away.

The important question is: What do you want to do with a tablet, and can the iPad do it yet?

iPad 3 will be announced at E3 this year and will ship in the fall

Okay slight exaggeration but for sure there will be an iPad 3 sometime next year. I hate apple and I don't get why people go gaga over thier products. Macs are all right but there are better laptops out there for less, the iPhone is good but not better than a Blackberry, the iPod is great (the one product I like from apple) but the iPad is just retarded. Tablets in general are retarded IMO.

It's primary use has been and probably always will be the apps. Browsing the web on a tablet can be fun and all, but even I (a programmer and web developer) don't really see the use or appeal of using the iPad (which I own) to view web content in anything but a very minor fashion. Click a link, read some text, close browser. Even better when apps use the internal apps browser module instead of actually launching safari.

Believe it or not reading or watching video in super ralaxed in the bed mode is one of the best uses for the iPad, something I would never use a laptop for.

But back to the apps. Some of the games are killer fun and given the huge increase in performance of the iPad 2 (even though the iPad 1 was pretty limited to start with) I am hopeful in seeing a dramatic increase in complexity of games. There is a star map app that allows you to _point_ your iPad anywhere and see the stars that should be there. Clouds, buildings, the EARTH itself does not block the view. Truly an awesome app that would suck having to view through the tiny box of a phone.

If you believe in the potential of tablets then the iPad is still the best game in town by far. If you don't, well that's your opinion, but I think you are seriously missing the point of a device like this.
