Forums - Gaming - Dubs or subs, a publisher's survey

What I'd be interested to know is whether having the original voices (in addition to a dub) actually costs more apart from the programming required to make such an option available in the game. I can't imagine that, aside from commercial songs in the games, a dubbing studio or individual voice actors keep some sort of copyright, and often the company localizing is a branch of the developer company anyway.

There are reasonable restrictions for some media carriers of course, on DVD there is the restriction of not having enough room for two or more tracks, but we're moving away from that. BD has enough room, UMD had enough room for a lot of the games affected. There is also DLC, and that hasn't been used often enough (only Blue Dragon?). The only one really justified seems to be FFXIII, for which I read they actually changed the CG sequences to match English.

It's practically a standard for DVD and BD films to have the original voices as well, so I'll welcome the moment it becomes a standard for games.

Japanese Audio with the choice of English Subtitles are a must for me I can't stand English dubs in Japanese Games I also can't stand English dubs in Anime ether.  with English dubs there is always to much lost in translation and and the English Voice actors and Actresses never fit the characters like the original Japanese seiyu.

but I can see that having both and giving the choice to the gamer is probably the best option like SO4 International PS3 for example.

Japanese Pop Culture Otaku

Everything should aim to reach SO4 PS3 solution:

it had english VA, orginal VA, english subs and japanise subs and you could set any combination.

good dubs > subs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> bad dubs

If done right, then definitely dubs.

Subs all the way. American VA is horrible.

For MOST anime's, I prefer subs with the Japanese voice acting. The opposite is true for games.

I filled out the poll and found out destructoid loves me, yay!

Same here for most of my anime I do prefer to listen to it subbed (apart from my favoured few), that has been changing over the years since more often and do not watch it dubbed (this is after finding out if the english casting is competent enough). The opposite is true for games I want everything dubbed even JRPG's maybe I want more of an emotional attatchment to that, I believe language plays a big part on that.

I prefer dubs for anything nowadays. So long as it is lip synced it's just easier to watch without having to read all the time.

Tease.

I gotta go with dubs here.

Dubs -  I don't want to spend my time reading. I get my reading done on VGC.
