Forums - Gaming - realism vs unrealism in games

there are some games that are good because they are realisitc and others that are good just for fun.  which one do you prefer though?  for instance, the tony hawk games are pretty unrealistic.  jumping up in the air and doing 3 900's in one jump isnt exactly possible, but when you do it on the game, its great fun.  but then theres skate (im pretty sure thats the name of the game)  is much more realistic and is probably more fun to some people.  another example, in devil may cry, dante has infinite amount of bullets, but in other games, you have a set amount of bullets.  i know theres gonna be poeple who say "it depends on the type of game."  try to pick one or the other.  the thread is pointless if everyone is in the middle.

Realism, Because every soldier always has a Noob Cannon and lots of ammo for it or the ability to get more instantly.

If i had to pick one it would be unrealism. But both are really good if the game is good.

It depends on the type of game......but you donn't want to hear that.  You want a commitment.  Well brother, d21 ain't afraid to commit.  In the world of video games, realism is a goal that just can't be obtained.  No matter how realistic graphics get, they just can't replicate real life.  Forr that, you're gonna need porn.

So "unrealism" for the win.  I even like when video games use the Unreal engine.  Games are about escaping reality.  That's why we play them.  I'll take my game where health pzcks heal, chicken comes from garbage cans, and plumbers can fly in space over a hypothetical game where you have to make your character shave, poop, and find the Origami Killer, any day.  I'm a fan of extra lives.

I have a different concept of realism stemming from my fandom of RPGs.

Realism in video games stems from a natural extension of reality. For example, the whole Fallout series is realistic because it is conceivable.

Surrealism or Fantasy in video games stems from whatever deluded thoughts the creators thought of and put to pen and paper. For example, the entire JRPG genre and the Final Fantasy series in particular. You have sword and melee characters easily killing enemies who are wielding 12 foot long machine guns and shotguns. Airships, chocobos, dragons, and magic. Not at all real.

As for enjoying one more than the other, it doesn't break down that way because I don't separate games into 2 categories of real and unreal. I enjoy well-made video games with my most favorite being a surreal fantasy MMORPG called the World of Warcraft.

Realism is more interesting because of the technical accomplishment.  There's still a long way to go until we get truly photorealistic graphics and realistic physics modeling.

I do not care if a game is realistic or not. Once its fun or at least entertaining from start to finish.

I like unrealistic games, especially sci fi shooters, i.e. Halo, Gears, Doom etc

compared to realistic ones i.e. Call of Duty, Battlefield, Medal Of Honor

Unrealism (is that really a word?) is king to me. No point to me in trying to be too real in a game. Give me anthropormorphic animal protaganists, lazers, and off the wall physics over texures and real life situational stuff any day.

I guess if you are a sports game fan, realism is generally a necessity, but for most everything else, it just seems more fun to take advantage of the medium and go for broke in the creative department.

LISTEN TO THE FIRST WORLD PODCAST REAL GAMERS, REAL AWESOME

I always live by the code, when it comes to games, that Realism < Balance, and Balance = Fun.

I personally do like them realistic, like Bad Company 2's realistic sounds, and the concepts of explosions and everything. I don't like the un-realistic part of tanks having unlimited ammo, neither with choppers.

But, for a game like that where realism can be used against you, for example; in real life M16s are better than AK 47s, but they cost more. In the game, the M16 can NOT be better than the AK 47 because that would screw up all balance formulas. They have to excel at one thing, and suck at another, or be a hybrid of sorts.

So, for me, Fun = Balance, and Balance > Realism, but I still want realism WITH fun/balance.
