Music games died because the devs and publishers were milking them for all it's worth, not because it was some "fad". Just look at the music game release dates: towards 2008, 2009, it's blatant overkill.

2D games died out not because they got less popular, but because devs did not want to make these games anymore, instead preferring to play movie director in 3D games. Just look at New super mario bros: rather terrible 2D mario game, if not the worst, but since it's the only decent 2D platformer on DS, 25 million sales, only bested by the original.

Also: saying FPS's have evolved since 1991 is ridiculous, they've barely changed at all, it still remains gun in hand, shoot stuff, in first person. But hey, that's why these retro games are fun.

It's always the people who know nothing about first-person shooters that say stuff like this.



Computer nerds like to pretend they're badass mo'fo's and shoot people and blow stuff up. And badass mo'fo's like to shoot people and blow stuff up in the virtual world as well as the real world. There's a perpetual audience for FPS. Not even the video game industry can screw up that genre to the point of becoming unprofitable; as much as I'd like to see it diminish in significance somewhat.

The trouble all began when Xbox dragged all those FPS loving PC gamers over to console gaming. Don't say it ain't true, because FPS was just another genre on console before Xbox came on the scene with Halo.

According to VGC (incomplete?) data: XB had a 1.5 FPS games per console attach rate, PS2 has a 0.3 FPS attach rate, GC had a 0.2 FPS attach rate, the console with the highest selling FPS before Halo 2 (N64 with Golden Eye) had a 0.57 FPS attach rate (0.32 without golden eye), PS1 had a truly pathetic 0.05 FPS attach rate, Saturn, Genesis, Dreamcast, NES and SNES basically all got nothin' (Dreamcast must have had something, surely).

Genie's out of the bottle now, ain't no puttin' it back.

Exactly, which means they count as music games.

I don't think so because in music games you create or play the music with a plastic instrument (guitar hero, dj hero, rock band) but in Dance games you dance the music and dancing is the main objective.



I always though music games were fads. the big ones anyway



FPS games aren't a genre, and as such, they will never crash.

First-Person is just a way to view and play a game.  Shooter is a genre.  First-Person or Third-Person shooters will be around for a very, very long time.  Shooting stuff has been a part of gaming since Space Invaders... or maybe Space War.  There's a lot more that can be done with a First-Person perspective than there is with a plastic guitar....
