Forums - Nintendo - Wii and DS Looking to Set 1 Week Record in North America

I was looking back at the database to see what console/handheld to see who sold the most in one week in North America.  After checking I believe PS2, on the week ending December 21, 2002, sold 960,847 units in one week, which by far is the most.

Question is can Wii or DS break this one week record.  Let's look over the scenarios.  First of all ioi has shown us reports that Wii sold 600k on Sunday, December 16, the first day in the week.  That leaves 6 more days to sell 360k.  Now if the other 6 days sold like the last week due to shortages it'd end, with about 800k.  Which wouldn't be enough.  But people are saying that Wal mart didn't get it's shipment til the mid part of this week, or right now.  Meaning it should have seen another boost.  It's possible that it could not only break the record, but sell more than 1 million in one week.  This is all speculative but just putting it in perspective.

Now the DS sold 700k last week.  It shouldn't slow down as the next week's sales data should be the pique of sales for the entire year.  Meaning it should increase.  We'll just have to see where it goes.

What do you guys think.  Can Wii or DS break the record and possibly go over a million in one week, which is unprecedented?

Not to mention let's give some credit to PS2 for putting the bar that high.  Quite amazing.  Was a beast of a console.

hmmmmm all we can do is wait now

I mean its a longshot, but first day sales for the Wii gives hope at least for it.

I definetly think it could, the Wii may not because a lot of them came out on sunday, so we'd have to hope that Wal-mart got close to 400k in one week but we'll have to see.

Well , either way, the Wii is seriously going to kick major ass this week, no questions asked. Add to that some 400k from Europe and maybe 200 k from Japan, and you have a bright christmas week :D.

Yea it all depends on that wal mart shipment.  Because if it didn't get much, then Wii would probably end up at about 800-900k, which still respectful, but of course not enough to top the PS2.

I mean right now I'm thinking Wal-Mart would have gotten quite a decent amount, so I'm thinking Wii might be able to pull it off but I'm still skeptical of course.  I mean who wouldn't be.  Trying to do more than 960k in one week would be quite a feat, which is why I'm so amazed that PS2 did it haha.

As for DS, it's probably more of a longshot, but it's going to increase.  I think it can do over 800k for the next week's sales data.  We'll just have to see how it plays out, but even if they don't break it still will be respectful.  Really hard to try and top the PS2 at sales eh haha.

I think system shortages are going to hurt more than people realize...

If Nintendo sent 1 million Wiis this week, they could do it.

But that's a big IF.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Very big if. But if there was any week of this year where someone could come close to this record, its DS and Wii for next week's sales data. So let's keep our fingers crossed.

I mean I'm still stunned how much PS2 did in one week. That's just amazing.

The reason I'm saying no is the whole 1.8 million/month thing. And according to VGC they're already sitting on two mil. So either we're overtracking or Nintendo is producing more, but if that were the case, wouldn't Ninty want to tell us that?
